Fiberglass boat repair

I got a free fiberglass row boat. The catch is, it sat in the weather for so long, the fibers on the bottom are exposed and sticking up. My arms show it. Can these be repaired for relatively cheap or should I just junk it?

scruff up the surface evenly with a semi-coarse wet-sandpaper (like 180-220 grit) and get the surface to a point where the repairs can "stick", get some fiberglass resin and some sheet fiber, and rebuild the surface. It's on the bottom, it don't have to be pretty.

IF the actual fiberglass isn't compromised, just wetsand the area and re-resin. Certainly don't junk it.

rough it with a DA or a die grinder.

Use matting and not cloth if the repairs big (mattings cheaper anyways.) I like epoxy resin, You'll mostlikely end up with a poly resin. (cheaper, again)

Whatever you decide to do, WEAR A PROPER RESPIRATOR. I've worked with this stuff for years, It's nasty. wear a painters suit and latex gloves at all times also.

It's an easy fix. Just remember, have fun with it - you really cant mess it up- as all it'll take is more resin and some filler to patch if you dig into deep.

In a boat where the fiberglass is in bad shape, it's quite likely that the wood structural members (stringers, transom) have rotted away.

If your stringers are in bad shape, it won't matter how good you get the glass - you won't have any structural strength.

Use duct tape. That'll work.

Subscribed. I've just started playing with fiberglass so I'm going to listen in and learn.

PM me with any questions on the process.

I just did a wet layup with some CF to help one of the local toolmakers out.

I hope it turned out after cure, still waiting on the call...

Awesome, thanks. I might just take you up on that offer. Obviously there's no substitute for practice, but it's nice to be able to pick a knowledgeable brain

This booger is wasted for the entire length of the bottom. If it was just a small patch, I'd be ok with it but are bigger repairs easy enough and just time consuming?
