'Terrorist Nelson Mandela' to be portrayed in film - News - Mail & Guardian Online

This sounds like a pretty interesting historical film. It is about period when former South African President Nelson Mandela was head Umkhunto we Sizwe (Spear of the Nation), the ANC's military wing.

Looks interesting but I'm a nerd when it comes to historical videos and the such.

on an unrelated, related note. Watched an older Chris Rock stand up special where he said that marriage isn't for everyone. That Nelson Mandela last 27 years in prison, but couldn't last 6 months of marriage out of prison. Kind of comical. An interesting movie, I'll have to check it out.

that is a very interesting article. people are complicated, three dimensional beings and the situations and societies we create are don't fall neatly into "good" and "bad" categories.

I have no problem with the fact that Nelson Mandela was willing to fight a war against a violent, repressive, and of course, racist Apartheid government. MK did engage in actions that are considered terrorism, and frankly, so have many other groups. That is why I have always had a problem with the notion of a war on terrorism because terrorism is just a tactic, not an ideology.

To put it another way, who in the US government would complain if someone like Qaddafi were killed by a car bomb? At the same time, there would be outrage if that happened to someone like the UK Prime Minister.

The real issue is that the ANC under his direction appeared to be willing to at least partially fight a war against innocents - Mandela admitted they were repeatedly involved in human rights abuses.
