Film Buffs: Your Worst DVD Freeze-Up Moment

Sign in to disble this ad
I was revisiting Goodfellas the other night, really getting in to it. (What a great film!) About 3/4 in around the time Ray Liotta gets his big drug bust... you guessed it.

ARRRRRGH!!!!

I tried everything (cleaning, skipping ahead, different player). No dice. What a freakin' drag...

So what's your worst DVD screw-up moment? And how can we educate some of these asshats who seem to be having so much difficulty taking the disc straight from the case to the player & back?

This is why I don't loan movies out anymore. That and for a while I never got them back.

Actually, I don't like loaning anything out really, because I seldom get it back.

It was a vhs, but I was watching the Shining. So incredibly suspenseful, I was nearing the end, about 15 minutes to go. And Scatman was walking down a hallway being stalked by Jack. You know he's about to get an axe in the back. Tension builds, just as it is about to hit climax, Suddenly the video goes all warbly, can't see nothing and all I hear are really distorted wobbly screams. Arggh! I never did get to see the rest of the movie and that was 5 years ago.

Not exactly a film buff movie, but I was watching The Terminal (with Tom Hanks) and it was about 5 min from the end, he is riding down the escalator and he might be able to leave and.......frozen. I still don't know how that movie ends.

I was watching The Passion of the Christ and the scene where the crowd is deciding whether Pilate should release Jesus or Barabus and the DVD froze. I still don't know whether Jesus got off or not...

I was watching Rocky IV. It was right near the end when Rocky was fighting Kserg and suddenly BOOM - frozen. Now I STILL don't know which is better - communism or capitalism.

Oddly enough I could have sworn that I caught a glimpse of a snickering Major Metal that night at my window but when I looked back he was gone.

incredible.

The three way shootout at the end of The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly. I'd imagine that's one of the worst in film history! The DVD was fatally scratched beyond that point and I didn't see the end for another six months or so

Yeah, The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly has to be the worst freeze-up ever. Mine was during American Psycho when he's got the nail gun pointed at the back of his secretary's head.

I was just watching that loast night. And that particular scene is the background of my myspace page. It was my fault.

a rented copy of Hard Boiled.

the infamous one-take (I think it was actually two cleverly edited together, if I remember correctly) gun fight.

the disc kept on skipping and freezing.

I hadn't seen it yet.

I was NOT a happy camper when the video store wouldn't give me a free rental after that one. Seriously, the disc looked terrible.

My DVD of Saving Private Ryan freezes at that bit right near the end when they're on the bridge, and its the really crucial bit when Miller gets shot. The DVD then resumes straight after that scene is over and its in the present day at the graveyard. It's really annoying.

I actually laughed out loud at this one, and that does not happen often.

Fight club. The one frame in the movie that no one want's to see stand still.

That copy went back to the store.

Not sure which frame that would be. That's probably for the best.

VHS of course gets all snowy around the, shall we say frequently freeze-framed moments.

It doesn't happen very often, but I got a DVD from Netflix that was totally trashed. Usually if I get a slightly scratched DVD and it starts to skip a little washing it under some cold water and patting it dry does the trick. Not this time.

The move was Transformers. Not a big deal, I'm really not a big fan or anything. I mostly rented it for the soundtrack as I wanted to test out a new subwoofer. This movie has some incredibly low Hz's in certain scenes. Of course it would start to skip, stutter and finely freeze up right at that scene. Frustrating to say the least.

Here's what I did , and I don't recommend doing it. The old water trick didn't help at all and I read somewhere that using toothpaste as a mild abrasive would get rid of surface scratches on DVD/CD's. I followed the instructions I found, but the DVD now looked as if it was dragged across the floor. Thing is,....it actually worked. It got past the scenes I wanted to see. It was still far from being in good condition, though. I reported it as damaged and returned it. It smelled minty fresh too.

I use windex and a soft hand towel. I don't know if that's THE best cleaning method, but it's made the crucial difference - especially when the disc has been doing drink coaster duty, or been in a pizza box.

I've thought about investing in one of those disc cleaning gizmos. But I never use my CDs anymore since they're all ripped on to the computer. And why should I pay whatever to be cleaning up someone else's mess on someone else's discs?

If it allows me to get through the westerns without any freeze-ups around the final showdown, I suppose it would be worth it.
