finding a stupid part time job (rant)

Sign in to disble this ad
The job market here is awful for student jobs, I hate it so much because nobody hires or calls back. It seems everybody was lucky the way they got their job, it's rediculous.

I am running out of time, I need to pay back my dad for a few things and I'm saving up for a car to buy in the near future. My problem is I can not find a job.

Nobody hires people with no experience here it's such a stupid cycle HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO GET A JOB IF ALL THE JOBS WANT ME TO HAVE JOB EXPERIENCE. It's not like they are hiring a brain surgeon. I call back regarding the application I get greeted with no respect, and the people don't know what they are doing.

I'm 16 and have no job experience. I am willing to work my @$$ off and do a good job but nobody hires, thing is I know some others in the same situation.

Any advice? seems now I literally feel like telling the mangers straight up that I CAN WORK and will do a good job. This is ticking me off so much as I do not want to fall behind.

I feel your pain. My first job was hooked up for me. The musical supplier for our HS came in during jazz band and heard me playing and was like "Wanna work retail for us?" and he went through the district manager and got me in. I couldn't find a job before that and had never been called back anywhere.

My current job was hooked up too... I spent forever looking around here, now WITH a lot of experience in several different fields and no one wanted to hire me because I was in college. I had offers that were put on the table taken off once they found out I was in school. Something came up with a group I've been volunteering with for 6 years now, and now I'm getting paid for a few months.

But right now the job market is pretty screwed. A lot of people who were working higher jobs get laid off and take a lot of the base level employment away from kids.

If it still looks like you aren't going to find a job, you can always try and start our own business. Nothing too serious, just identify a need of people you can address or fix, find a reasonable rate, and go for it.

Best of luck though!

Lie on your resume. Some obscure work place. Your friend's number as the manager.

1) I wouldn't lie on the resume.
2) Apply anywhere and everywhere. Don't think you're above working retail.
3) Ask family, friends if they know anywhere who's hiring.

Seconded, and don't think you're above food service either...

you never said what type of jobs you are applying for.

Dishwasher/busboy at a restaurant is a good starting place. grocery store stock boy.... Landscaping...Day-labor construction.

Like someone else said...a lot of low level jobs are being taken up by former upper level "laid off" people...times is tough right now.

I applied for about 30 jobs, but didn't get any until my application got passed on to a stupid place where no-one wanted to work. When I started working there i found out why...

Anyway, I'm much happier now with a new job. I still don't get the experience thing, they all ask for work experience, for what? To serve cheese toasties? to put clothes on racks? Heck if it was something that required any skill then I'd understand it but lets be honest, they could train blind monkeys to do some of the jobs students are willing to do on the cheap.

You'll something, just be patient. I felt exactly like you did at 16. All the kids I went to school with were getting jobs, and even taking them for granted and quitting because "the job sucks" and then immediately finding another one. I on the other hand was getting turned down left and right at the very places that these kids worked. Eventually I got a job doing data entry for a real estate appraisal company. The woman who cut my hair at the time actually knew the owner and told me about it. The strange thing was, I got hired, but I was told that they passed over applicants who had years of experience not just in that job but in working in general. Where as I had 0 experience.

It just shows that someone eventually will give you a chance if you're patient.

Keep trying. Apply lower, do what you have to to make money.

Also, if you think thats rough, try finding a new job between tours. Ugh.

Make sure if you apply for retail you understand they'll expect you to have open availability. This means, as low man on totem pole, you get to work the night shift and weekends and holidays. If you put on your application, "Can only work Monday Wednesdays and Fridays from 10-3" ferget it. No job for you

I can tell you now it's tough. My company (I work retail) has over 600 applicants in our system..... in a 10 store area. That's 60 people per store... considering each store only has 15-20 people on the entire staff, you see the odds. Most retail places are cutting hours (including mine).....

Also keep in mind when you go to pick up an application, dress the part. I've had people come in asking about working wearing tank tops/ flip flops/ chewing gum loudly/ way too much makeup /generally looking ......not like someone I'd want to hire. Dig out those pants and that nice shirt (polo, button down, something)!

If you're doing all that, don't feel bad when it takes a while to get a job. Took me 2 months to find mine, and that's just in retail!

I feel your pain man. The job market here is being overrun by returning students. Unfortunately, it seems I was a little late getting back, or a little slow getting started. Have had a few interviews which amounted to nothing, which is depressing, but I gotta keep plugging away at it.

I am applying low, pretty damn low. Busboy, bag boy, dish washer, shelf stocker, car washer all that crap.

I don't bother applying in retail as over here you have to speak french well (I've been told I have the worst French people have heard). I'm just looking for a low class job just to make some money.

god I dislike this province

You might want to try talking with some roofing companys for some summertime work. A strong back and a willingess to work is usually all thats required.

Easily six months ago Peavey, you used the "I don't know French very well" excuse. From then until now you could have learnt more of it and even know enough to speak to a customer. Don't blame the fact that you have to learn French in your province, blame yourself for being too lazy to do it. It's not doing you any favours by not knowing it, by the sounds of things. If I were you I'd go out and make an attempt to improve it, theres no escaping unless you move to a different area. And you don't have the money to do that.

I'm guessing it's not your lack of experience, but trust. At 16 no one is looking at you thinking you are just the man to be trusted. Make yourself look like like the cleanest cut, gee whiz, trustworthy kid in the neighborhood.

My first job (at 16) was delivering furniture, which I got through the former delivery boy. Then I was a Plumber's Assistant (carried that heavy toolbox and was an extra set of hands with a wrench) that I somehow received through my uncle. I learned a lot about crooked business that way, I had to quit because of moral/legal/safety issues.

I guessing you look like a dirtbag Peavey. I did when I was your age. As shallow as it may seem no one is going to look past that. Get a haircut, shave, and look professional. You'll get a job then. Sucks what has to be done in the name of earning a buck. This is why I'm a whore.
