Finished my first triathlon today with good results!

Ran a good, and IMO solid, 1:42. Not bad for having never ran one before. It was a Sprint Tri (400 M swim, 25 K bike, 5 K run), so it wasnt quite as difficult, but its what most start on. I placed 2nd in my age group, being beaten only by a 10 year old spitfire who had more energy than Taz. I gave him mad props though, he beat me by 1 minute.

Swim kicked my arse, even though I swim often, but I didnt stretch quite right for it. Arms tightened up.. I did lots of leg stretching.

Anyways, I loved it, and Im hooked. Ive been super active lately (training daily [weightlifting, kettlebells, jumpstretch, and lots of cardio]) and been eating healthier (totally cut out pop, fast food, sweets, etc.) Im feeling it too!

Big bonus, Im finally getting my 6 pack.

Well, Im stoked, wanted to brag a little bit more. Only had a month to really train hard, so for my next one coming up on August 8th, I know what to expect. That one has a 700 M swim though!!

Respect, couldn't do that to save my life (I could swim 400M and still be alive, does that count? )

Congrats.

I started a thread about running awhile ago. Are you only tri-training or are you trying to do running or biking events as well?

That's great man!

I actually started cross training a few weeks ago. So far I've mostly done training for marathon running (did 17 miles recently), but have started swimming and have made great progress so far. I just need to buy a bike so I can start training for that as well.

I plan on doing as many events as I can, be it triathlon, marathon, biking, etc. I'm just in love with it.

Nice, the only one of those that I could do is the 5k. I have been really into weight lifting lately, with a decent dose of running mixed in.

I actually gave up lifting for a while to focus on running. I'm now starting to integrate lifting back in with the swimming as well.

I use running as a method to show more of the results of my lifting. It keeps my core looking nice and trim.

Way to go man. Have you ever looked into adventure races? They're SOOO much more fun than mini-tris, IMO. Then again, I'm out of shape enough that I don't consider doing anything competitively. It's all just for fun for me.

My dad actually formed Team Mojo USA (www.teammojousa.com) after an adventure race. Its now become a team with over 130 members, and a non-profit organization! Adventure races are definitely something I know of, and plan to start doing soon enough!

I'm feeling it this morning.. Serious shin splints and "biker knee." Oh so worth it though!

Congrats on finishing your first, and that is a good time! My wife completed her third ever today, and her first Olympic distance tri. The bike had a nasty, steep mountain section that really kills your quads.

Were you a pretty good swimmer to start with? That's the thing that holds me back from getting in to the triathlon.

What's a 6er Tommy?

And yeah, I swam Freshman year. I haven't swam hard since (being a Senior) but I'm naturally good at it. I think I broke 7 minutes on the swim.

If you want to improve your swimming speed, you're going to have to do laps with 5 lb weights on your ankles and wrists, or by tethering a drag bag to yourself (canvas bag that catches water to increase resistance). Look into free diving to increase your lung capacity, and the exercises they do work on oxygen efficiency in the body. Never hurts to train more for what you want to improve upon.

Keep in mind that you can try running sprints in the water for resistance, and do the same by adding weights and a drag bag. Should help in running as well.

Good idea Auzzie! Also, Freshman year we swam with actual tennis shoes on. It was brutal.. they fill with water. We also do this when white water rafting, good practice.

Anyways, I have one coming up on the 8th, shooting for 1:35-1:40.
