My employer would probably do the same. If it were a family member, I could get FMLA.

I'd cancel a tour even if a band member's pet died. Although, I think I'm the only one in the band with pets at present.

I don't think I or anyone else would argue that it is a financially smart thing to do.
Taking a vacation day (if you have one left) is the only way to get time off for a pet at my place. And really anyplace I've ever worked at or even heard of. If I went in and asked for an unpaid excused day off for a pet problem I would be laughed out of HR. I'd be lucky not to get drug tested. Its like that for everyone I know, blue or white collar.

I can see taking a tour date off here and there for a pet's illness. But, an entire tour?

We all agreed that we would either have to burn vacation if we had it, or lie. I not saying this is right or wrong, I'm not looking to get into that. I'm just pointing out that most employers would not accept pets as a excused absence.
Add US Postal worker, I had a co-worker pull a paper suspension, the next step is termination, over the death of one of her cats.

I work in a hospital and I can guarantee you they'd be fine with it... at least in my department. I'm protected by the Union so they can't just fire me at the snap of a finger.

If they want to attempt to fire me over a pet's death, they can go right ahead. If I'm crying my ass off, they don't want me there and I don't want to be there. There are more jobs in the hospital, anyway.

On the topic of Fiona, I didn't know she still made music.

I've lost a couple of dogs that I loved very much. I couldn't afford to take time off though. It would have been a nice luxury if I could have. Kudos to Fiona Apple for having the fortitude to have her priorities in proper order. I've never even checked out her music that much, oddly enough, as I'm a huge fan of the singer songwriter genre. I will pick up some of her stuff asap. Any recommendations?
