The first living recipient of the Medal of Honor since the Vietnam War

Read the story here: http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2010/...n7044681.shtml

The amount of sack it takes to take on an entire group of Taliban fighters by yourself to rescue a fellow soldier and then walk away to tell the tale is pretty damn amazing.

I didn't see this posted on the forum anywhere, and feel story definitely deserves some recognition.

P.S. We're all adults here and know how act without breaking forum rules, right?

Pfft, I do that on my way to the grocery store every few days...

Seriously though, that guy's in very distinguished company. The Medal of Honor is so infinitely hard to get, especially while the recipient is still living. I saw a statistic somewhere that something like nearly 80% of medal of honor recipients since WWII were awarded the medal posthumously.

Hats off to the Sergeant.

It's guys like that, and stories like that, that make me proud to be from this country and hopeful to serve it as soon as I'm allowed. I'm not big on religion but God bless that man.

That man probably has bigger balls than at least half of TB male population's combined all together.

I'm raised with true stories like where 100+ man beyonet charged towards machine gun nests during our independence war so I know about balls, trust me.

Um, yeah. From the story:
"As he was dragging Gallardo to cover, Giunta was hit twice. His body armor saved him."
That's hit, as in hit by bullets. And I think this guy had already earned a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart.

While he is certainly deserving, I find it hard to believe nobody has shown the kind of valor required to earn the Medal of Honor since the Vietnam war. Yes, there are the posthumous awards, but there has to be more than one person out there.

There have been more than one person, 10 others have received the award since Vietnam, a time period when the US wasn't heavily engaged in military action.

Part of the problem with the Medal of Honor are the requirements that have to be met to allow a soldier/sailor/airman/marine to qualify for it. I'm willing to wager there have been a lot of Navy Crosses, and other such similar awards, but because of the strictness of the requirements for the MoH, it keeps the numbers down.
