Ive been getting into this new FPS lately named Combat Arms ( combatarms.nexon.net - check it out, its free!)
But ive been getting owned and failing left-right-centre...
How do i get better (to all the veteran FPSer's out there).
Yeah. Thats all i think. Do i just keep getting shot in hopes of one day getting better?

Practice, like anything. |

Most FPS games assign higher value to headshots so figure out the recoil on that gun and always concentrate on aiming so that it sends the majority of your bullets into the head. If one shot to the head will kill your opponent then aim directly at the head. If it takes more than one then aim below.
If you're in a face-to-face shootout with someone then it helps to keep strafing side-to-side in most games. Although that can vary according to the game's physics and if both of you are spraying all over the place sometimes you might just need to stop and take a split second to aim and fire.
Other than that play smart...don't rambo it. If there are places to shoot from concealment then do it. Try to stay out of wide open areas and take advantage of corners (shoot, go back behind the corner, come out, shoot some more, etc...). If there are places on that game to reload your health or armor then use them heavily. Also, be wise with your reloads. If you have half a magazine left then make sure there isn't another guy to shoot before you start reloading.
That's all I can think of off the top of my head. I'm currently #2 on the Half-Life 2: Deathmatch server that I play on. Sometimes #1. Yeah, I'm a geek.

Pretty much everything DigMe said, except there are good times to rambo it, If you're face to face with someone, and about to reload.. switch to your pistol, pop off a few as you get close to him then knife/melee him, It's a pretty sure effective way to kill in most FPS's when dealing with a close combat situation. I too am a geek Most of my playing time goes to racing games though.. but I am a pretty good all around gamer. |

Oh, by the way, what's your name in Combat Arms?
I just recently started back playing it again after having played closed beta a few months back.
My name in it is Dreagen, if that comes as any surprise. |

You can kill someone and then just move straight on to the next without reloading, but if it turns out that the 'next' is actually two or three opponents you are not going to have enough bullets to take them out.
If I can, I reload every time I fire the gun, even if I only fire one shot. Obviously if you are under fire you might not be able to afford to reload, but when you can, do.

When you approach a corner, you should be pointing at head/chest level (depending on what you want to hit), right where someone would end up if they popped out. Likewise, when you pop around a corner, aim where someone would be if they were running down the corridor. Do this consistently, and you don't have to attempt to twitch your crosshairs onto each guy you see — which is doable, but not the best tactic — you just click when they drift in front of your gun. Likewise, you don't really need to aim precisely when you're face to face with someone. Since you're presumably side-stepping left and right to avoid being shot, you can just change your aim to your opponent's other side (always at the proper height), and shoot when your evasive action brings you into alignment. The above mostly applies to fast games. Beyond that, it's more a matter of knowing what your opponents will do than in anything mechanical.

I was playing CoD 4 the other day, I was doing alright, but it's just not the same as it used to be... games are more realistic and there are very little "physics exploits" as there were in the engines back in the day
But... the only advice I can give is to play every night, every week That's if you really care about it.. it's like anything - you need to practice to get good at it.

I only meant in my OP not to start reloading until you know you're clear at that moment. When I first started playing I would immediately reload after killing someone every time and I got killed many times because there was a another guy that showed up a split second behind that guy. I always keep a full mag.
Also, I agree with what MooCooMan said - if you're in a showdown and you run out of ammo and the guy is still alive I usually switch to another weapon instead of reloading the one I have.
