Flash Flooding South East QLD Australia

Sign in to disble this ad
Flash flooding hit South East Queensland a couple of days ago. So far there are 10 Dead and 60+ missing, thousands of homes and cars destroyed in the floodwaters. The water is expected to hit Brisbane some time tomorrow which is already heavily flooded.

here is some footage filmed on monday of how powerful flash floods can be.

Now I understand how one can get killed in a flash flood!

I hope the missing people are OK.

I have been following this for the last few days because I know a few people in Brisbane. I read an article that was saying that before this, the whole area had been in drought for a few years.

Makes me glad to live in a part of the world where our worst natural disasters are snowstorms.

I never really thought about it, but Canada doesn't really get to enjoy much natural disaster fun, does it.

yes, it's getting serious. Queensland is now 80% flooded and has been declared a disaster zone

It's very sad. Apart from the obvious human toll there are no doubt probably thousands even millions of animals that have perished. Some of the hardest footage to watch is that of horses panicking in the water.

There have been reports of bull sharks in the flood water too.

It's going to take a long time for some sort of normality to reach everyone involved.

Sri Lanka also has serious floods at the moment. It's pretty humbling when you realise we are at the mercy of mother nature who often unleashes with no warning.

My best friends from australia, so i've been getting updates from him. I've always wanted to go there, being an animal nut. Its a beautiful country, and now I wish I could go to help with the rebuilding and stuff.

I have a good friend who lives in Maryborough. Last I heard she said her house was up far enough on a hill that they didn't expect her house to get hit. Haven't heard anything from her since; but I also understand they've lost power, cell phone service, internet, etc. so probably won't know for sure how it's going with her for a while. I just hope that "missing" number goes down in the future because they find people alive but stuck on roofs, etc. and not because they find more bodies. Best wishes to any of our members who live in Oz...

That's a relief. I hope the US is standing by to offer any help we can. Australia is always by our side when we need a friend.

Woke up today and its not raining again, thats two days in a row. Untill then it had rained every day for over a month. Most of them proper rain too.

For a few days there we were cut off in every direction, however we didn't flood here, as the tides were low enough fortunately.. however it could still happen yet. Apparently we are in for a cyclone within the next week or so.

It is a tragedy, however it was really needed. Not only has most of Queensland being in drought for quite some time, however Australia's longest river system has been dying for years now. My home town is right at the river mouth of the Murray river, 6 months ago when I was last visiting the river the once kilometre wide river was down to about 20 metres wide. Almost 250,000 acres of lake was empty except for a small stream running through in a couple of places.

With this rain last I heard the river is back up higher than it has been since I was about 5 years old, something I honestly thought I would never see, I'll be down there next week and it is something I look foward to. This disaster has been quite close to home for me on both fronts, however its good to be able to look at both the good and the bad.

Its quite humbling to see the power of mother nature. For years people have been blaming the agricultural industry for over using water, which they probably have been, however one good year of rain and its all back to normal. Lets hope we can learn from our mistakes now that we've been given a second chance. Though I somehow doubt it

Flood peak was about 1m (3 feet and a bit) less than expected, at around 4.4m. There are still thousands of families without homes, and food and petrol supplies are getting scarce in places.

Pretty much most of Queensland's agriculture has gone down the drain. Not only are some crops ruined, but so much topsoil has been washed out to sea that the land has become even more marginal than it was to begin with.

There's rumblings already that Brisbane City Council shouldn't have approved some of the developments that have gone ahead since 1974. Little things like aged care homes being built in the floodplain, for example.

Very glad to be high and dry here - I've been battling overland-flooding since xmas eve myself, but 4 meters trumps the 4" I've been getting downstairs...

Queensland regs have always been rather slack concerning flooding, but it sort of makes sense as there are plenty of old Queenslanders built on flood plains which are just raised to avoid the flood waters. So there would need to be some sort of way to discriminate between different cases, and I guess to save the hassle they just approve all of it.

In SA, there is a floodline from the last big flood in 1956, and nothing will be approved to be built below that. I figured it would be like that everywhere, but up here on the sunny coast half the roads go under water at least once a year, so if they brought in regulations like that nobody would be able to build anywhere
