| They do what's known as 'pattern work'- you rarely, if ever, do a 'straight-in' approach, you fly a standard rectangular pattern that is for traffic avoidance and to take advatage of the wind direction. You need to take off and land into the wind as much as possible to keep from getting yourself in a deadly 'stall/spin' situation. Stalls and spins are not dangerous if you have enough altitude, but in the pattern, you're usually 1000 ft or less.
Maybe you should try a 'Discovery Flight'...AOPA has coupons that give you a 30 minute flight with an instructor. Last I checked, it was $49. Best 'high' I ever got, and it's legal! |
