Flip Video HD recorders .. Opinions sought ...

Sign in to disble this ad
Anyone here own one of these;

http://store.theflip.com/en-us/products/MinoHD120.aspx

Ive got a line on one for pretty cheap and was thinking about getting it to bring with me to Memphis in May at the end of the month to record events and what not.

If you got one, Id love to know what you think about ... pros and cons.

We love ours. Great for getting quick vids of the kids. They don't wait for your camcorder to turn on, get set, etc.

I have the older flip version, and the Sonny "webbie" version. Both are pretty awesome. I like the Sony better, as the lens pivots 180 degrees, but the sound / video is good / comparable to the new flip hd.

My dad has one. I haven't really asked what he thinks of it, but any time the family gets together i see him using it and he seems to enjoy it.

This.

My wife got one of the non-HD ones for Christmas and it's pretty handy. We keep it in the living room next to the digital camera.

With two kids under 3, you have to be prepared for unexpected cuteness

we have a local woman here in town that uses one to record informal, acoustic performances of bands when they have shows. she puts them on a website. it definitely provides quick and easy recording "on the fly." and, the video and sound are good.

as for example, here is my new band doing one of these sessions (btw, i like the second tune we do more than the first).

We have a Flip HD and love it. Clear picture and image stabilization. Sound is fine for a little handheld.

yeah, i was impressed as well.

cringed tho, when she referred to us as two "girls" and two "older guys." i guess that is not the flips fault....

Yeah, we have the HD and I need to start bringing it to shows. It's pretty good quality for what you pay. Built in mic is fine for a quick take.

This is our experience as well. That, and the fact that they run on AA batteries and have USB integrated, means this thing can't be beat for the price.

I have the first gen MinoHD. It's pretty good considering the size and they price, but it doesn't handle low light situations as well as some other cameras.

Go with the Kodak Zi8. It has an external mic jack. Cnet says:

The bottom line: With the Zi8, Kodak finally surpasses Flip Video's video quality and feature set.
They also say it has strong low-light performance. I've been thinking about getting one. I believe they can be had for around $150. I don't see myself buying a video camera of any kind without an external mic jack.

the flip hd does have nice lower lighting capture... but if you're band is effing loud, it'll distort the mic.
