POLK CITY, Fla., Jan. 9 (UPI) -- Smoke from a wildfire coupled with fog Wednesday morning led to a 50-car pileup and closure of part of Interstate 4 in central Florida.

At least three fatalities were reported in the crashes caused by zero visibility and several tractor-trailers were burning, WOFL-TV, Orlando, Fla., reported.

The Florida Highway Patrol said troopers were unable to reach the scene by vehicle and were walking through the smoke to locate victims, WJXT-TV, Jacksonville, Fla., reported.

Lakeland Regional Medical Center spokeswoman Bobbi Zagrocki told the Tampa Tribune it had received nine patients, seven of whom appear to have "significant or serious" injuries.

Troopers closed the highway for about 15 miles between Lakeland and Kissimmee, and appealed for drivers to park their cars and remain inside to avoid endangering emergency crews, media reports said.

Eastbound traffic was backed up as far as 15 miles, reports said.

The fire was lit by state forestry officials on Tuesday as a controlled burn but it jumped a firebreak and has burned about 300 acres. Firefighters have yet to declare it under control, the Tribune said.

Seeing that scared me to death. Last year I was driving home from FL northbound on RT 95 early one morning before sunup and ran into fog. It was the MOST scared I have ever been driving a car. Those poor people didn't have a chance.

Yes, thanks!

I went right by there last night coming home from the airport. I just saw a little smoke, no big deal. I guess the "controlled" fire restarted at the same time the morning fog rolled in

I-4 between Lakeland and Tampa claims people on a good day They are finally getting the construction finished. It's had lots of areas with lanes shifting between narrow concrete barriers. The commuters FLY through their. Other than traffic is was much better last night than it's been for the past 5 years or so
