Have you never seen a cover band?! I'd think it's so common that Wilson Pickett himself was tired of hearing cover bands playing it.

I had to look the song up on youtube, although I did recognize it once I heard it... although I have no idea why or how.

Usually results in dancers on the floor, normally women dragging men to dance(or their girlfriends).

The original with Wilson Pickett
mustang sally - wilson pickett - YouTube
Wilson Pickett - Mustang Sally - YouTube

Covers?
Buddy Guy & Jeff Beck with a slower, "soulfull" version:

Unique version with what some may call "overplay":

Unless you can sing it like Wilson Pickett or play it like the Commitments, don't play it.

All the years I played in a cover band, I (thankfully) never played Mustang Sally or Brown Eyed Girl.

Was it a death metal cover band?

I continue to have to play both all the time.

I despise seeing rock cover bands. I may have heard it at downtown music festivals before while passing by but not actively listened to it.

It's not like I have any coolness to lose if I play it.

I never heard this song until about a year ago after I saw it being mentioned a ton of times on here. I've been in a lot of bars with cover bands and still never heard it. Maybe it's a age thing?

This is always a touchy subject among musicians, especially when you start arguing/yelling/crying about the difference(s) between a cover band and a tribute band. It's somewhat funny how most coverband folk will urinate on original bands, given that someone needs to write the tunes. We can't just play Sweet Home Mustang Brown Eye Girl forever, right?

I don't belong in most of my area's bands because the set lists are often near identical. My job is very hard, so the idea of playing out every Fri-Sat night isn't terribly sustainable in the long run, although the constant turnover might suggest that this might be the case. The idea of playing songs half-assed to play more songs just doesn't jive with me. So, if I could find a perfectionist band that doesn't play every weekend and has a different setlist....who am I kidding, that doesn't exist.

So according to that chart the only times you don't play Mustang Sally are at a hardcore Bluesfest, if you are playing at a bar full of ugly women with no tip jar, and/or if the bar is devoid of women.

This is fantastic.
