Folder or Directory?

I am old DOS guy so I still call the thing that holds a bunch of files a directory as opposed to a folder. Anyone still call it a directory? Or am I just out-dated?

I go back and forth. And Swedish has two words that match those ("katalog" and "mapp") along with folder being perfectly acceptable.

Is this a thinly vieled Fassanova'esque attempt to show how "old school" you are?

Folder for me. I stopped calling it a directory when I went from Windows 3.1 to Windows 95.

Ha! I'm old enough to have used the USER command in CP/M. That would be a great way to confuse people and feel superior!

Nope. Just because I might talk about using DOS, or knowing what 'sys 64738' means, or working with a 8.5 inch floppy, programming on a green monochrome 40 column monitor, programming a crappy video game in assembler, or pining for a TRS-80 back in the day, should not constitute me bragging about being old school. I don't see why anyone whould think that.

Directory works for all operating systems. I believe folder only has widespread use with Windows.

If it contains multiple files I'd call it a folder.

If it contained multiple folders (like on our networked drive) I'd call it a directory.

If I am directing a filepath, saving something or whatever to a certain place, I call it a directory.

If its a thing on the desktop I put a heap of **** in, its a folder.

I pre-date even DOS with CPM if you don't count mainframes.

I remember when there were two kinds of DOS.

If I'm talking about Windows, it's a "folder." If I'm talking about Linux/Unix, then it's a "directory."

HHaving only ever used windows, I will acknowledge what someone means when they say directory, but have never called it that myself, though I might now cause it seems so fancy and techy.
