Forced to stop playing for a while

Smashed my fourth finger on my left hand on Tuesday. It's my wedding ring finger. It happens to be a finger I use for bass.

Surgery was yesterday morning. Pins and screws stay in for six weeks. Gentle physio for 2-3 months after that. Expect to have 80-90% mobility in that finger when fully recovered. My hand is in a cast with only my thumb and first finger exposed.

That stinks man. Big time. Hopefully the recovery goes well. And try not to lose your mind not being able to play for a while. Broke my wrist a couple years back, was a seriously crappy couple of months!

Take care of it!

pshhh bass players only really need their index fingers to play root notes, it's not a guitar geeze.

Happy recovery buddy.

I know how it feels man, i broke the nerve and the thing (forgot technical term) that makes the finger move in my right hand index finger, it sucked big time, required surgery. I had always been a pick player so i just aught myself to play holding the pick with my middle ring and thumb finger, the fact that i was unable to play finger style made me appreciate more the style, and now that i can do it a lot.

There is a Jewish proverb that says "everything id for the best" at the end you will see that something good comes out of your injury.

It usually is! When I broke my wrist, I learned very quickly that saké and cycling do not go well together.

Well...some idiot, with a now sore face, learned on Tuesday that I don't respond well to men trying to hit my wife. Especially with me three feet away. Unbelievable.

I like to think of myself as a respectable business man and father of two adult children. I'm not street fighter. (I do enjoying playing rock music in the odd biker bar.)

Just don't ever try to lay a hand on my wife or my daughters. Ever.

Despite the pain and inconvenience, I'd do it again.

BTW...the cop at the police station said the same thing you did.

We smiled.

Sorry you got hurt, but good on ya for defending your wife.

Take this opportunity to work on your right hand tapping! Or do some double thumb exercises with open strings.

I went to the cop shop after the hospital. The officer on duty was really cool. He said no report had been filed. When I told him of what the guy did, and I told him my reaction, he just smiled and said he would have done the same thing.

Embellisher...thanks for the advice. The three fingers are set together for a while. The ring finger has a pin and a screw in it to keep the alignment correct. The surgeon told me after the operation that it was in better shape than the x-ray suggested. He expects me to have 80-90% mobility when recovered. Six weeks in this cast and then pin/screw removal. Gentle progressive physio for 2-3 months.

Anybody want to babysit my Sadowsky? How about my 75 fretless p-Bass?

I'm joking. Knowing you guys, I have to state that I'm joking right up front.

Nay on the finger up his os-nay.

I'm right handed and the injury is on the left hand. I have no idea how I did it.

I'll keep the Sadowsky company for you! I will only play it at my church.
