OK, right to the point here....is this a black thing? Any white boys eat fried baloney sandwiches?
Here is why I ask. My sister was married to a black guy for about 10 years. I never heard about fried baloney sandwiches until I met him. Sure enough, when we went to his family get togethers, fried baloney was served many times. When we visited his family in Compton, we had fried baloney. Then today, I am watching a show on Food Network called "Cooking For Real", hosted by Sunny Anderson who is an attractive black woman, and she starts talking about the days in the ghetto eating fried baloney sandwiches.

My family came from Germany.
I never thought of it as a black thing, thought it was a German/Polish thing.
Or just a "poor" thing

This poor ol' Eastern Kentucky hillbilly has eaten my fair share of those.

The blistering process gives it more of a ham flavor, so I wouldn't say it's a black or white thing. Just cheap and easy for kids to make for themselves when parents are working (I was home alone a lot as a kid, so I figured out many meals like this on my own).
And BTW, are there any TBers from Vienna? Because I seriously doubt that those tiny bologna sticks in a can of pungent water could possibly be an Austrian delicacy....

i really love a nice thick slice with fried eggs, yum yum.
I also slice mine about 1/2 way to prevent the middle from not getting brown (sombrero bubble)
The only thing then is, it looks like Pacman when done.
I also like fried chicken and watermelon, (not at the same tiime, at least) so I never did buy into that sterotype.
Jerk chicken is another matter, never did aquire a taste.

To make the best sammich you need to slice a piece at least 1/2" thick (3/4 is better) that way it is more like a ham steak and doesn't shrivel up to nothing.

-Mike | I used to eat 'em in hometown Pittsburgh in the 50's and 60's. It was a variation on regular baloney sandwiches which you'd get sick of. Mom would jazz 'em up that way and she was Irish! Kinda like a Zappa "burnt weeny sandwich"!
