It's scary... tough times we live in.
I've just read that Ireland and Denmark are now in full recession? I'm wondering how low everything will go before it picks back up again.

As far as stationing planes and ships there I believe Iceland is in NATO as of now so I don't know what would happen if Russia 'takes over'. It would at least make a great place for them to refuel and would surely ruffle some feathers in Washington. Russia is already making such strategic muscle flexing moves in Syria, where they will have a permanent naval base in the Mediterranean at Tartus. | dude, it's 2008, the cold war is long gone... i dont get it what some americans have against russia... |

The Russians are currently claiming about 1/3 to 1/2 of the Arctic for themselves [oil/natural gas]. The idea Read Icculus posted may not be so far out.

The government and the central bank are doing everything they can to get us out of this crisis.
But the CEO of the central bank actually had a very good tv interview last night. He stated that Iceland as a country will never go bankrupt. Some of the banks will go down under but they are doing everything they can to make it easier on the public.
The reason why this hits us so hard is that our banks have become huge. The economy of the banks is 9-12fold of Iceland's GNP.
So we have a double fail.
1. Is the banks.
2. Is our currency. It is currently in free fall. We have around 14-15% inflation right now. We are dependent on import and with the free fall of our currency, everything is becoming much more expensive which in turn boosts up the inflation
For example:
This time last year, 1 Euro = 84 ISK
Now: 1 Euro = 131 ISK.
This time last year, 1 US $ = 58 ISK
Now: 1 US $ = 96.5 ISK.
It sucks, but I hope that the actions of the government can stabilize our currency soon.
