I get at least one of those to every.single.ad I post. Most within the first 10 minutes of publishing it.

I normally reply with this picture:

Sure, it's a tired meme...but so are craigslist scammers.

He's probably from Nigeria - I got a response from a guy one time when I was looking for apartments - he actually called my cell phone 3 times, and finally answered and responded with this...

Now get this guys... I put my wife's custom Jeep up on Auto Trader I think it was... I get a quick email from a guy and he says out of the country from Abu Dahbi, wants to send a company check from his USA company. Sends directly to my bank...

I call bank and ask, hey did I get a check in today? Why yes... What did you do with it? Well Bob we deposited it is that OK? Sure... Hey just out of curiosity how much was the check for? $99,900... I go gulp, OK I just wanted to check... I may have a copy of that check somewhere.

Well a week later it came back with FRAUD stamped all over it. (I told the guy that sent it BLOW ME in a return mail, figured if it cashed, well he can work the details out right?)

I wanted to sell the jeep.

So I call the company and ask for accounting. Say missy, I just got a check returned from your Abu Dahbi operation for $99,900... on account number XXXXXXXXXXXXXXX.

She says, that check should have gone through.... UH HUH, well I wondered what a company in Arabia would want with 10,000 copies of Yvette's porn video....

Then it was her turn to go gulp....

I say should I send this order to YOU to figure out what to do with them? I'm a little concerned the check was returned.....

Then I just said, I think you have somebody pulling stuff in AD and your security should look into it. The FedEx really came out of AD. They wanted the check and I thought what for and just tossed it somewhere.

This is a true story BTW.

SCAM ads are the worst thing since the internet was invented.

I wish for once we could string up one of these jerks and hang 'em high at noon. Better yet, YOUTUBE the video and send across the globe. THIS is what we'll do if we catch you fools!!!!!

Just for fun I'll sometimes bait these guys and give them the info they asked for via email (fake of course) and keep them replying. I've sent them fake western union receipts before (sometimes they take a trip to their local western union store just to find out that I made a "typo" on the control number I gave them). You can keep them going for quite a while if you get creative. more info here! www.419eater.com

Listen it's an old scam when a Nigerian con man sends you a check, you cash it, bank declares fraud, and the scammer gets a hold of your account information when the bank tries to cash it.

I always reply with everything they need...

The name I give is usually something like Fraude B. Insaeed (Fraud B. Inside - FBI), then I will give my address and phone number as the local FBI field office. I wonder if they ever get any letters or calls though?

This guy SENT the check, drawn on a USA bank... He never saw the check again... It just cycled the fed system in this case.

If I wanted to have risked going to jail, I could have forced the accounting chick to make the check good. Which was the humor...

This was almost 5 years ago when the scam crap was just getting started. I have had about 20 further attempts, maybe more. CL is a terrible place for that crap.

On the other hand, I had some EAW speakers and QSC amps for sale, and I got a response from a Korean man up in San Francisco. He said he wanted to buy my speakers for his church. I almost blew him off, but entertained a few more e-mails. He seemed to know about the speakers, and the more we corresponded, the more I got the sense he might be for real.

Ultimately, we talked on the phone, and he discovered that the Carmel Valley I listed as the location in my ad was the one in San Diego, not the one by Monterey. He still wanted them, but I wouldn't ship them. He asked if I would take a check from his church. I politely informed him that cash would hit the spot.

So, one Wednesday, he drove down to my office in San Diego (8 hours flat from San Francisco), tried them out in my office, handed me $4,000 in $100-dollar bills, and drove back to San Francisco with a stop in Pomona to pick up some road cases for them.

Bottom line, broken English or an accent doesn't automatically mean a scam. But 99 percent of the time it does.
