| | | | Galaxy Tablet - whats the point?
Sign in to disble this ad
My SO got me a very expensive xmas gift - a Galaxy tablet. I have to admit I have had zero interest in owning a tablet, Ipad or similar - they just seem like useless toys to me. I don't understand what it can do, that my laptop or android phone can't do better. It seems like it is only useful for playing games or browsing the internet/email. I haven't even opened the box as I think I should return it, as it is too expensive of a gift to keep if I can't see using it. I have been googling for days to try to find out if it can be useful in any way for me, not much luck - only reviews of "how fast" this or that tablet are, etc.
So tablet owners - tell me why I should keep the thing. What use is a tablet? Or is it really just the gimmicky and expensive toy it appears to be?

Anyone else? What good is the tablet?

I know a bunch of guys who have scanned all their charts and sheet music into their tablets, so they can be completely paperless at gigs, rehearsals, studio. I've seen a few guys that have a very compact stand for stage use, you can't even see it from the audience. They're much more compact than a laptop, but bigger display than a smartphone. If you run sound there are rta apps, which work on a smartphone but are much easier to see on a tablet.

You said it yourself, the tablet won't do anything that you cannot already do via your laptop and android phone.
So, unless you need another mobile device to do what you can already do with your current mobile devices I cant see a reason to hold onto it.
Unless you need a digital picture frame...? Or what lowfreq describes.

I'm not disagreeing with you here because I feel the same for the most part, just saying.
As for its uses, I've found out that people who are not too adept with using computers (my parents) like using their smartphones and a tablet far more for just general browsing. They say it feels more intuitive. Whatever works for them. |

I am just hoping to hear of at least one unique use for it that could convince me to keep the think. I do like the chart idea.
What is an RTA app?

Generally includes an spl meter, also will show you a real time frequency plot. Useful for tuning a p.a. to a room, ringing out monitors, quickly finding feedback frequencies. |

What is an RTA app? | Santa got me a Droid tablet, albeit a cheaper one. I love it. Unique uses? No. It's all about the portability and convenience. My laptop is essentially stationary. The tablet, I just grab and use anywhere.
Either take it back, or give it a try and see if it grows on you.

She has a pretty current gaming tower, a writing/stylus/convertible tablet type laptop (she writes in onenote) and a 'beater/surfing' laptop that she uses regularly. Her want for an Android tablet was to replace her 'beater' laptop. Now she has her web, email, skype, dayplanner, shopping lists, etc all in a handy 7" tablet she can throw in her purse and go. I got one attached to our phone plan so she has 3G internet where ever she cannot get wifi.
Myself, I'd love to use it for all the PDF reference books I have as well as surfing and listening to music... definitely a 10" version for me. My eyes are getting bad and I could use the bigger screen |

after i started to noodle around on it for a bit, i 100% fell in love with it. the way i describe it is, its a larger iphone, and a smaller laptop. it sounds like if you had a smartphone and laptop this would be useless, but its surprisingly useful to me.
it was a gift. open it up, and toy around with it. they're fun, and really usefull (especially for the chart-scanning musicians, witch i am not yet but will be soon.) yes, to an extent theyre just big toy/gadgets, but so what? |

So tablet owners - tell me why I should keep the thing. What use is a tablet? Or is it really just the gimmicky and expensive toy it appears to be? | It is lighter than your laptop, the battery will last about 4-8 times as long, and it has a much bigger screen than your phone.
A tablet is where we're going...I've had a Xoom for about six months, and when I travel I don't bring a laptop or even a Netbook...I take the tablet. I can check email, do web work, take notes and photos, and do about 90% of everything I can do on a laptop. And I have 10 or more hours of battery life!!
No, it's not a laptop - but it blows the phone away, and it's close to a full laptop in capability.

I think EVENTUALLY I'll get a tablet, if for nothing else so I can get this thing for my guitar rig: DigiTech iPB-10 + iPad 2 Bundle | Sweetwater.com

No, it's not a laptop - but it blows the phone away, and it's close to a full laptop in capability. | My netbook gets 8 hours battery life - same as the tablet. The netbook has a bigger screen and has a real keyboard, as well as a trackpad. The netbook has wifi - it can browse the internet, play games, and check email, just like the tablet.
However, the netbook can run dedicated music recording and publishing software, can run photoshop, as well as word, excel, etc. The tablet cannot seem to do much more than play games, email, and browse the internet. The apps in the store seem like typical useless phone apps - no real programs.
I've yet to see a reason to keep it. I think I'm just gonna return it - it's nothing but a toy, and does nothing as well as my netbook.

My gaming needs are minimal these days so portability plus basic social and media needs = WIN. That said, the Galaxy's come with a nice graphics engine as well. MP3's sound great through them too.
My tablet won't double as a phone except with Skype - my tablet only handles WiFi.

Plus, porn | This........you can buy the Real Book on the Kindle app for $17. Plus I have scanned all my lead sheets I have been collecting over the years so I basically have over 1000 charts from jazz to rock all in a handheld package.
Everything I do on my Android phone is much more pleasant to use in a 7" screen.
