So I want to get a gaming console for the family and me. The wife has been very excited about the Wii console because of the physical involvement in the games, but I'm geared more towards racing, fighting and first person shooters. I don't like adventure games like Zelda, etc. I like to be able to boot up, do a quick race, fight or shoot some virtual villains. I've been out of the loop for these things for a while and really don't know who has the best games. For some reason I've always thought that the PS3 was better without any real foundation to support these claims. Network playing is probably a nice thing. I enjoyed many hours of downtime at work playing Unreal Tournament online back in 2000.
What would you recommend that will please me and can also be enjoyed by the children and wife?

I prefer the 360 for gaming purposes, but if you don't have a Blu-Ray player and want one, I'd go for the PS3 without question. That's actually the main reason I got mine, its use as a gaming console is a secondary functionality to me.

J/k, I got a Wii, its fun, but you have to overcome your desire to sit back and push buttons lazy man style, like you want to do with most video games...there is much more physical activity involved in most Wii games...
BTW, you should play "force unleashed" on Wii its very cool, It'll help with the "I'll KEEEL you" threads...
Oh, and my wife and I play Wii games together with the kids too... its pretty fun, I have to admit... |

With PS3 youd be stuck with a bunch of half assed cross platform racers untill Gran Turismo 5 comes out, some time in late 2009. GT5 Prologues fun but there isnt much to it. On the bright side you have Little Big Planet. LBP is fun for everyone, and a must if you have kids. |

Wii has many games that a great to play with family. Plus even your parents can figure out a wii controller.
Both console and games are cheaper than the other current gen stuff, as well. and there are a few good FPS's and Racers on Wii. |

If you want a halfway decent racing game or FPS you need a 360!
Online play is the awesome, you'll love Call of Duty, Halo 3 is still a great game, and the 360 has a good selection of racing games.
If you get a 360 check out Mass Effect and Fable 2...two of the best games I've ever played...but I have a soft spot for hybrid RPGs.
PS. Make sure you get a 360 with a hard drive. |

Unless you are a hardcore gamer, you won't notice the difference in racing games from the more traditional systems to the wii.
I gave up NCAA because as fun as it is, I should be practicing with that time. Sometimes I do jones though......

| | | | How old are the other members of the family? Younger, I would say Wii. Teens/adult, I would say PS3.
PS3 was my choice for a few reasons. Blue-Ray, gaming console, no red ring of death, there have been technical difficulties with the 360 where the console locks up and has to be replaced. I know that was supposed to be solved with the newer generation models, but a friend of mine has a new one that died recently.
The Wii is definitely more family oriented, but they really don't have the games that appeal to me. Right now I'm playing Dead Space, which is a first person shooter horror game. You won't find stuff like that on Nintendo. I prefer the more mature games instead of the family style. |

I did notice that the Wii games seem more kid like and I want to be able to get some 'man' games, if you know what I mean. My kids young. If there's 3 or 4 games that they can play, then that's enough. I'm sure my wife would love to play fighting games with me

Makes me feel like I'm 10 years old...

I have a 360 and I like it a lot. The online is $50.00 a year, but the service is really worth it. There are a ton of great games. It is mostly first-person shooters, but I'm sure there is something for everyone.
Graphics-wise, both consoles are about the same, but the PS3 is a more powerful machine... if that is important to you. |

Chicks dig my Wii.
