Gas prices are making me healthier.

I've been riding my bike to work everyday.... takes me about 35 minutes. Driving took 20 or so.

The past two days, I've eaten way healthier. Smoked quite a bit less. Drank lots and lots and lots of water, and even taken my vitamins.

Could the secret to a perfect body possibly be $5 a gallon gas?

I'd take my bike if the commute wasn't four blocks. Hell, maybe I'll bike tomorrow.

I'd bike to work, but there's no way in hell I'm taking a bike on those roads... Traffic here is insane and drivers are worse. I'd be dead in a week or so. We do have a lot of bike trails around here... but most of those go through wooded areas. Not where I work, haha. I will bike to school in August once I get my new apartment.

Speaking of a bike. Looking for mountain bike but they are all like... $700 for decent one. What are good brands to look for?

Are you actually doing mountain stuff with it? If you're just looking for a good road rider but don't want the stance of a racing bike, look into some hybrids. I got a motobecane hybrid (relaxed stance of a mountain bike with lighter and nicer components) for around $250 or so. They're a pretty good brand from what I've heard. But I'm sure they're some bike junkie out there who can find 20 things wrong with it... but it works for me and what I do.

I will be doing off-roading with it, yes. I am waiting to see where i move in the month or so, if its not too far from work, it'll be one of commuter for summer (I ain't riding in winter )

But i do a lot of camping in mountains, places i go I offroad on the Jeep, so i might just do the same with a bike. Places we go I've seen a lot of cool rocky trails I'd love to ride a bit.

I got this bike http://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-US/...in/1280/29354/
for around $520. I ride around with my friends on the streets, commute to the gym, and take it offroad on some trails I would not classify as a walk in the park. It has held up flawlessly so far (had it for about 6 months) and I have not been easy on it at all (I have maintained it properly though). For hardcore commuting, I would put some less aggressive tires on it and just switch when you go riding.

Sexy.

Heh, 500$ on a lift or 500$ on a bike
tough choice.

I'm a pretty green liberal kind of guy. I've been saying that really expensive gas is kind of a blessing in disguise. Very expensive gas will make other forms of energy much cheaper. If the price of coal goes up, nuclear energy will finally seem like a good idea again. For people in urban areas, the expensiveness of gas will get people to use mass transit, car pools or even their feet to get around. Expensive gas will make wind, solar and hydroelectric energy seem like a much better idea.

Are we finally reaching a point where environmentalism is the cheaper way to go? Thats a little bit scary.

i haven't been a part of the biking scene in a while, but some well known brands which should still have some economical pricing are giant, specialized, cannondale, and trek. there are way more though so try and go to your local bike shop and check them out.

By the way, it's a slightly hard decision, since bikes best suited for commuting are not very good on trail, and vice versa. MTB tires are all knobbly and not very comfy on city streets, so slicks on a city bike would be better, since they also roll better. They also sell semi-slicks with the center part smooth and the sides with more grip, so you can still turn on the soft trail.

well i have been riding my bike to school, the liqour store, ironically the gas station for smoke occasionally, i too feel better and smoke alot less (from 15 smokes a day to 3).

Wish i worked closer to home, riding a bike 20 miles through the hood doesn't exactly sound like a fun idea.

About 38 miles each way to work for me...except Monday, when it was 185 each way. I could easily bike to work if they allowed bikes on the interstate! Also, they look at me funny at the tollbooth when I pull up on a 21-speed. Not to mention the kamikaze drivers out here in Houston!

For me, it's my Metro at 40+mpg, rather than bikes...
