getting into skateboarding - looking for a certain feel

hey, so my friend gave me this old skateboard for free (a cheapie, but soon i might get her better one), and i want to get it ride-ready.

i dont have any intention of skating parks or street or anything like that (i hurt myself too often in younger years), so i thought i'd like a board for cruising. a quiet and fast ride, with enough turn for carving.

as of now, i'm looking into new wheels, new bushings, and some riser platforms (it already has some wheelbite with the current setup). i wish i could get some longboard trucks...but thats a future investment. uh so im sure someone here has done it, what sizes/brands would you recommend for this kind of ride?

EDIT oh and should i worry about wedged risers? i know thats more of a longboard thing, but they're not significantly more $$$ than flat risers.

Longboard seems to be your go, they are rather sensitive though at least for me. There are also short long boards or something that do pretty much the same with less stuff but that's just preference.

I think you'd be better off saving like a buck fifty and getting a sector 9.

I love mine, granted you can hurt yourself real bad on them but once you learn how to carve to slow down you should be ace for just cruisin' 'round.

i've thought about it, but it isnt really the right board to do it to. the nose and tail are not flat, the have a slight curve to them, so attaching trucks would mean either planing, or somehow cutting a wedge to a curve. plus from what i've heard, schlongboards are only at their optimal with longboard trucks.

i've thought about that too, and i definitely want one at some point (although i have no use for it atm). i just thought this would be an oppurtunity to gradually build up a ride. first the wheels, later the trucks, and maybe eventually a longboard deck. its really about cost right now...i'm trying to find the cheapest set of 65mm's i can (and then bushings and risers are pretty negligible).

Gravity skateboards......

Their completes are pretty reasonable and you can choose between Randal & Tracker trucks..... Their wheels are also decent.

If you're looking to mod up there's about a million products for you to look into. I personally prefer wedged Trackers on a longboard, but that's just me.

ABEC 11 make sick wheels for just about any type of terrain you're looking to take on...... And don't forget to use Bones bushings......

You should check out SilverfishLongboading.com..... They have a forum & those cats can answer any questions you need to know.

Longboarding is a LARGE scene..... You should look around before you buy, as there are a TON of choices..... Happy Cruising.....
