I keep getting this message when I log in to Youtube:
We will be phasing out support for your browser soon.
Please upgrade to one of these more modern browsers.
The choices are:
1.) Google Chrome
2.) Firefox 3.6
3.) Internet Explorer 8
Which one would you choose, and why?
You can also suggest other browsers.
Any help appreciated.
Thanks,
Mike

However, you'll need IE to accommodate Windows updates and a few sites which may not work with any other browser.
Exactly which OS version are you using, and what are your machine's hardware specs? |

Is there a way to turn this off?

What's IE and OS?
I have no idea what my machine's specs are.

Mike | Hi Mike.
IE = Internet Explorer. OS = Operating System. Example: Windows XP?...
It's been a while since I've used the mighty Windows (I use Ubuntu Linux now).
Can one of you Windows guys explain to Mike how to get his PC's processor speed, RAM total, and hard drive capacity?
Thanks.

This said, I'm still a Firefox guy.

Another question: Is it safe to download these browsers from the internet? Or should I buy the one that I choose as a disk in a store?
Someone told me that they downloaded a browser from the internet, and said there was all kinds of junk attached to it.
Thanks for your responses so far.
Mike

In Windows XP: *click* start (button in the lower left hand corner of the screen)-->Control Panel-->*click* Performance and Maintenance-->*click* System (a window will pop up displaying: the OS version, CPU___GHz, ___MB of RAM.
Said info may be useful if your PC is old & slow since this may affect browser performance. |

| | Registered User | | Join Date: Jul 2008 Location: Eh? | | It seems you are a little unfamiliar with web browsing habits. I'm assuming the message from Youtube meant you are using Internet Explorer 6. This, in turn, probably means you run Windows 2000 or ME, or an early distribution of XP. The first two possibilities, combined with IE 6, make you part of the most vulnerable computer users, as documented security flaws abound through Internet Explorer and older Windows versions.
Browsers, nowadays, are always downloaded. The big names you read on here are all free. There is a running gag among slightly knowledgeable users, that Internet Explorer's sole purpose is to go download Firefox. It is completely safe to type www.mozilla.org and go download Firefox.

Mike | Web browsers are free, and the major ones (like Firefox) are safe to download.
Just compare your PC's hardware specs(CPU speed in GHz, RAM in MB) and Operating System version with any prospective browser's (or any other application's) system requirements first to make sure that your machine can run said browser (or any other applications you might wish to install later). |

There's too much 'data mining' these days as it is IMO. | I've heard if you get the open source project, called Chromium (instead of Google Chrome) it does not track like this. Not 100% sure on that, just what I heard.
Also, what browser are you using currently??

I got a virus in November that completely shut me down; I had to take my machine in and get it cleaned out. This virus came in the form of a message with the Microsoft Logo on it. It looked very genuine, and it said I needed to download certain updates from Microsoft. I downloaded it, and that was the end.
This is why I'm a little paranoid about downloading anything.
I will look into getting Firefox.
Thank you all for your suggestions; I really do appreciate them.
And by all means, keep the suggestions coming.
Mike
