Getting Rid of Old Items

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a few old items that I really have no use for but I feel ba about letting go. One item is an old rifle my Dad gave me that used for plinking as a kid, but it only catches dust in my closet. The other is a high school ring that I never wanted, but my Mother insisted that she order for me. I have hardly ever worn it, and I am now way too old to walk around with a high school ring on, IMO.

Should I just pawn the rifle and melt the ring, or should be sentimental? Sometimes I feel like I am being guilt tripped by my poor, deceased parents.

Turn the ring into a bullet and fire it out of the gun.

Don't pawn the rifle. Take it to a gun store where someone who knows something about it can give you an idea of what it's worth. Then decide to sell it or keep it.

I've gotta agree with this. What would look cooler than an odd colored bullet capped with fake gem? Plus, when it hits the target the gem will shatter.

The ring you don't need. Your mother wanted you to have the ring for whatever sentimental crap women don't seem to understand men don't go through. I'd keep the gun though. If/when you have kids shooting would be fun for them, you should already know this. If your kids don't like shooting, get rid of the thing.

When I came back in here and read what you had highlighted it looked like that to me for a second too. This thread must be haunted.

Sell the ring, keep the rifle. I'd call it an heirloom or some such, but that's just me.

That's why still have them but sometimes I wonder if things are better being owned by those that will use them. I have several things from my Father that I really value. I have some neat stuff from my Mom too. It's just that I don't really like jewelry, and I neve get to shoot anymore.

It doesn't hurt to keep them though.

I'd keep em. My dad gave me his old POS squier bullet guitar for xmas because he knows Imma into music and he already had it so thats all he could afford. It's my 3rd guitar and I don't even play guitar. And as much as I'd like to sell it to fund something, I just can't... cause I'll know Imma miss it when he's passed on.

This reminds me of an old single-panel cartoon I saw one time. Two cellmates are sitting on their bunks talking. One is a regular man, but the other one is a rat (the true rodent type). The rat is speaking:

"...And I'd have gotten away with it, if only I'd gotten rid of the evidence. But hey, I'm a packrat."

My Dad left me some guns too. I sold them and got some stuff I really wanted. Thanks Dad!

Meh, just keep them until a solid idea forms about them.

I'd keep them. Maybe you could hang the gun on the wall?

Not so sure on the ring. I don't like jewelry, so nothing I say here would be of any value.

I don't wear my high school ring and the only time I wear my college ring is to a formal event. Like you, my mom wanted me to have a high school ring so I have one that sits in my jewelry box for sentimental reasons.

When my step dad passes I will get my modified Colt Gold Cup .45 back finally and I will inherit his WWII Colt GI .45 he got from the Air Force when he retired in 1974 along with a pump .22 rifle he has had since he was a kid. Both will be locked in my gun safe until I die. Well maybe, I might have a reliability check done on the .45 and shoot it.

considering how much room such a ring actually takes up, I'd keep it. For the sentiment and memory behind it.

the gun, I'd feel less inclined to keep, and I'd see if it was worth something.

just my .02

I say keep both and make them decorative. Normally, I'm the first one to say junk/pawn/smuggle whatever it is but those things don't take up much space physical and do seem to have some real meaning so I say make them decorative... the HG Channel could probably help with that more than I could .
