US GI in SKorea gets 10 years in prison for rape - World news - Asia-Pacific - msnbc.com

I cannot help but think that he is lucky he committed this crime in Korea. He would have gotten at least twice as many years in the USA. In many states, he would have gotten life in prison.

Very true.

There were a few cases like this in Japan as well as I recall

Japanese relations in general w/ Korea and China are a very interesting study actually. A lot of the stigma of WW2 (and pre-WW2) remains

This, and other reasons, is why the Marines are leaving Okinawa.

I don't think that the Japanese colonization is a good comparison. The US is supposed to be an ally with troops stationed to assist South Korea against the North Koreans (China too, but no one says that anymore.)

I suspect that incidents like this will just hasten the day when Korea totally takes responsibility for its own defense.

I doubt it.

I think it will hasten the removal of the US physical presence while still leaving the US completely responsible monetarily for the defense of Korea. In perpetuity.

I doubt it. The US no longer has the money. Things are changing and will coninue to change.

Taken from the story (link).

Mr. A was recorded on camera with Pvt. B by 20-year-old Pvt. C, a female colleague of Pvt. B.

What's up with pvt. C not helping Pvt. B?

Uijeongbu District Court convicted 21-year-old Pfc. Kevin Flippin of sexually assaulting the 16-year-old girl numerous times after breaking into her small boarding room near Seoul in September, court spokesman Lee Sang-yup said.

Flippin committed many "sadistic and sexually perverted acts" while threatening the girl with a pair of scissors, a knife and a lighter, Lee said. The soldier robbed the girl of 5,000 won ($4.50) as well, he said.

I think this is just the act of a complete a-hole who got himself off by harming someone else.

My post was in regards to the multiple cases involving American men attacking Korean women.

Not the Kevin Flippin case in particular

He didn't want sex. He wanted to hurt someone.

He probably would have gotten the same under the UCMJ before the newer status of forces agreement with South Korea. It still is a capital offense. Even with consent statutory rape is 20 years.
