my point being is that i'm not going to buy PS nor use a cracked version... Gimp is free.

Might have something to do with this 'learning' thing that you mention...

| | | | Gimp is great you can do just about anything you can in photoshop. It's just a different interface really.
There are also loads of great forums, tutorials and ebooks the help too.

I believe Gimp, for the everyday user can be just as good as Photoshop. If all you want to do is some photo editing and chopping it would be more than fine.
I stuck with Photoshop (Elements) because I was just learning (noob) and was already getting use to the interface. Plus I was able to find countless tutorial and plug-ins online. Photoshop could also handle .raw photo format and at the time Gimp could not. |

I believe that Gimp can do everything Photoshop can do. It's just a matter of learning it, and there are far more resources to learning Photoshop than Gimp.
However, for the price difference, you can buy a LOT of books. |

If I didn't already buy and get hooked on PS I probably would have given Gimp a little more time to grow on me. I've heard a lot of people say the same thing about Gimp. |

For most users, you can get by with Gimp as long as you are comfortable with the interface. I use it alot on some machines. But, I've been using Photoshop since version 4.0, so that's the interface I'm most comfortable with. |

Does gimp handle .raw and .tiff photo formats now.
I also remember having to download a separate noise reducer (filter) when I had gimp.
Can it do animated gifs?
How is it with plug-ins and all the automated filters PS seems to very abundant with. IIRC, Gimp didn't have much if anything in that category. |

I'm simply more use to photoshop's interface using layers so I'm not about to download it to check it out. If I happen to lose my copy of PS I will before buying another PS, though.
I also did a Gimp vs Photoshop on google.
The consensus is Gimp if fine and more than enough for the home user. For the professional, it's not quite there yet. You can get professional results with Gimp, but there are some professional features it's lacking. For instance, Gimp does not do CMYK and Pantone. (CMYK= cyan, magenta, yellow, and key (black)) Not very important if at all to the home user, but if your a pro it's an industry standard. Not to mention the easy integration to other web design tools photoshop has.
For photochoping and photo hobbyist, I'll bet Gimp has everything you need. |
