I saw ginger beer was mentioned in the straight edge thread, and that got me thinking:
Are ginger kids looked down upon / stigmatised / oppressed in your country of residence?
Where I come from, ginger kids are in a way looked down upon. We perhaps crack a jolly good joke at their expense every now and then, but nothing serious. Not even more than we joke with other subjects, when I reflect more on the subject. The South Park ginger episode is however an immortal classic in the narrow slice of society I experience.
In some places the same rule applies to gingers as to yellow cars: if you see one you may hit someone on the shoulder with considerable force, while exclaiming "GINGER!" or "YELLOW CAR!" depending on which of the two you see.
But still, does being a ginger does pose any difficulties in our society? Is kick a ginger day something the youth in your country practise with fierce vigour?
This thread is not meant to hurt anyone's feelings, I'm merely [bi]curious*. *u see what i did thar?? |

And they're not referred to as "gingers" in the US, at least, not anywhere in it I've lived. Generally, we call them "redheads."

As a matter of a fact, the said South Park episode was the first time that I realized that ginger kids are somethig that is ridiculed somewhere. Somehow it doesn't surprize me one bit that the "somewhere" seems to be US.
When I was a kid there was some "gingers", either full blown, or just with freckles. None were treated any differently than anyone else.

There is a difference between redheads & gingers I believe. But no, they are not looked down upon here, as far as I know.

Pure gingers, or just gingers, got red hair and frecles. There are two varieties of daywalkers; the regular and the seasonal. The regular only got red hair or a shade of red in their hair colour that might only be seen in bright light. The seasonal get red hair during the summer, when the light shines on the hair making it, for some reason beyond me, red and not blond.
And as a second addition; red beard is considered awesome. |

I was teased in middle school... but not that bad. Everyone called me 'Pete" (From 'Pete and Pete'). I got called 'Ferguson' once or twice (from 'Clarissa Explains it All').
Now, i don't think i've been called a 'ginger' in a looong time.
I have dreadlocks, so the full 'gingerness' is a little reserved. My beard is red thogh.
Meh...

This is a game we used to play called Slug Bug. Whenever you saw an oldstyle VW Beetle you'd punch someone and yell,"Slugbug yellow" or "Slugbug blue!" Etc. Quote: |

The one that was tossed around a lot that was annoying was that phrase, "I'm gonna beat you like a redheaded step-son". When my mom re-married and i got a step-father i heard this so much.
I dunno... call me lame, but i don't see much humor in child abuse...

My son has brownish hair but his beard grows in fire red and always grows longer on the corners of his chin than in the middle, forming sort of an inverted horns effect (he grows no cheek hair -gets that from me). It's pretty cool.
