Give me an idea for a cell phone app (java)

Sign in to disble this ad
So,I had a meeting yesterday with this software developing company. I'll be starting my internship soon and maybe continue working there.

They wanted me to find a few ideas for cell phone applications and they'll choose one for me to write it.

I'll have 4 weeks to finish the project. If I don't find a project good enough they won't be accepting my internship.

I need ideas for useful cellphone apps that I can write with Java. No games though, they made it clear.

Come on TBOT,you people always come up with good ideas when I need them.

an app that automatically detects and blocks telemarketers?

that's the only one I can think of that won't get into juvenile humor.

I've always thought that making a scale app for touch screens would be a great seller for very light weight items.

Dude, make one that prints the words "Hello World" in courier.
J/K

I don't know, any industries you'e shooting for?
What audience are we marketing this towards?

Simply put anything that has a continued use to keep track of data would do great. Record some data upload it to a server and display it on a webpage, that type of app seems to be taking off.

Does Java imply that your app would have to be developed for small "non-smart" phones?

How about OCR (optical character recognition) using the phone's camera? Where it would generate a .txt or .pdf from each photo.

I don't think that's possible the way they do touch screens, however.

Wouldn't it be better to write your app for an iphone/blackberry platform? If you know how to do this BTW, send me a PM. I have some ideas for some apps that I'd like to bring to market.

I know there a few music apps out there but how about something like band in a box. Choose a key and style and get a MIDI track to play along to.

Could do a different style forum reader.

If its going to be for Android or blackberry check the carrier and maker sites for api that may give an idea.

I don't know about that, but I think smart phones can run java apps too, otherwise they wouldn't be called smart eh?

I'm sure they'd love that idea.

I have no idea about image processing,a few friends took a class and their projects were about image processing. From what I understood,it's not an easy task. I don't think I could cope it off in 4 weeks. But that's a very cool idea,I'm sure it would sell on the market too.

It would probably be better, but they want to test my skills with java I guess.

How about an app that a parent can install on their kids phones that doesn't allow texting while moving above so many MPH (or KPH). So sick of having to dodge teenage girls who think they have so much experience driving that they can text behind the wheel. Don't know if thats even possible, but it would certainly make the world a better place.

Good idea..
I think it's possible.
But people who on the same MPH (same car) who is not driving will not be able to texting too. They'll complain. Also people in the bus/train...
Hmm..

Make it so that the parents can activate it easily from a computer or their cell phone. If the teen is taking the car, drag the magic slide and they can't text when moving over a certain speed (I suggest a little over average walking speed, texting on a bike is a terrible idea too)

I don't know if it's possible to implement, but I'm definetely suggesting this as one of the topics. This is a good idea.

I could see it working on smartphones that have GPS tracking abilities (pretty much every teenager has one these days and iPhones are constantly checking you in to apple now ) and there's apps out there that track your speed, so it's certainly possible.

Just keeping a kid from deleting it would be the main challenge

Yea, on platform like iPhone or Blackberry or Android it will be more possible than on Java.

Give password o undelete it, or hidden it

How about an app that can attach photos to your phonebook entries? It's easily done on an iphone, but I've never seen it done on a phone that is programmable by java.

Actually, they might be able to emulate Java, but they're not native Java platforms like phone manufacturers buy and adapt for specific phones.
