Give me the lowdown on Volvos

Hey, I am looking for a new car and a friend of mind just offered me his 1998 Volvo V70 GLT for $2500, needs tires and the parking break is seized. It has 250,000km on it. How reliable are these cars? How about gas mileage? What are your experiences with volvo?

There's nothing inherently wrong with Volvos.

Except that every person I've ever known who's driven one was an insufferable snob.

I'd love to get a mid 80's 240 DL wagon, and shove a smallblock Chevy into it.

The ultimate sleeper, imo.

sorry, i was just playing around.

Well, a lot of people drive them, and i doubt a majority would buy a crappy car. In that idea you can assume they are reliable and have a good quality to price ratio.

Several of my friends have had Volvos. Most people that I know that have them stay w/ the Volvo line for a LONG time. One of my dad's friends buys Volvos for the whole family. He, his son, and daughter all have S70s, and the wife has an XC90. They safety features are excellent, the ride is nice, and as long as you keep them up, as with any well-made car, they should last forever. I know of mid-90s 960 w/ just under 300,000 miles on it that still runs and looks just fine.

Yeah, I am seriously considering this car because I know he wouldn't try to screw me over. The only thing is that I am a little worried about the parking break thing, because there is the chance that it is something else and the back axle is actually seized. Gotta get a mechanic to check it out.

If the parking brake is seized up, it's pretty much a brake job in the back and replacing the cables, which won't be too bad. A friend of mine bought a 1996 Volvo 960 for 800 bucks with a broken radiator. We replaced the radiator, and he's had it for almost 2 years and drove it to California from Illinois. They are pretty good cars, and not extremely hard to work on. (Unlike a BMW, I'll never buy one. Did a clutch, and I hated that damned thing) As long as proper maintenance has been done, and you keep it up, it should last a while.

Yeah, I am going to look at it next weekend. He said that he could go down to $2500 if it is going to cost a bit. He doesn't drive it anymore and wants to get it out of his garage.

I've had a couple of older Volvos. Got T-boned in my Turbo Wagon and drove it home. The young lady that hit me with her fathers full size GMC pick-up needed a tow truck.

The last one I bought for $750 and drove it for over two years. Finally drove it to the crusher yard with over 300K miles, only because I wasn't willing to spend $1,200 to fix the front end.

For twenty-five hundred I'd grab that baby.

I know a guy in NY that did that. He also took doors off a two door and grafted them onto the wagon making it a two door. It required a lot of work, moving the door frames back and having the rear side glass made. The finished car was amazing.

Good cars, pretty reliable, utterly indestructible. All these people who want safe vehicles should abandon their SUVs and buy Volvos! Oh, and the estates/wagons are ENORMOUS inside, more than enough room for the gear for an entire band!

I'd still buy a Saab though...

I've had to work on Saab too. They are pretty bad, as are Jaguars. Brit cars are not mechanic friendly...

Saabs are Swedish! Although a lot of them are based on Opel parts nowadays (which are mostly German)...

But I agree with you about British cars... apart from Aston Martin (mostly glorified Jaguars), Mini (owned by BMW) and TVR, there's not much quality coming out of the UK at the moment. Although Hondas are made in Swindon and they're pretty reliable...

Ahh, so they are...

A lot of cars these days just aren't designed with mechanics in mind. What engineers ought to do is prototype a car, and then tear it down and rebuild it. Then hit the drawing board again! (to fix all the dumb stuff they did...)

Blame the crashworthiness regulations. Between the bonnet/hood having to be shorter for pedestrian impact, and the necessity for ever-increasing crumple zones and so on, the actual usable room under the bonnet/hood in the average car has become so small that everything has to be crammed in, making them harder to service. Not to mention the amount of circuitry required for the ABS, ESP, traction control and so on.
