Going to California

Sign in to disble this ad
So the girlfriend and I are going on a road trip down to California in a couple of weeks. We'll be staying mostly in San Diego (5 days I think), then working our way up the coast. Just wondering what some good places to eat are (San Diego, LA and San Francisco are our likely stops), and any good places to catch some local music.

Don't miss Phil's Barbeque down by the Sports Arena. El Indio Shop on India near Washington is a Mexican Taqueria that I've been going to for over 40 years. The taquitos are great. Try the mini chicken burrito ... made from mini chickens. For fine dining (and expensive) try George's at the Cove.

Make sure to pass through Monterey. In between Moneterey and San Fran is Santa Cruz...I used to hit the Santa Cruz Diner there all the time (and it's open 24hrs).

I spent a summer working in Santa Cruz in college and honeymooned in Carmel/Monterrey. There are so many good restaurants between those 3 cities it's ridiculous.

If you want some great seafood in Santa Cruz right on the water go to Riva Fish House period. It's on the wharf. Maybe you'll get a window seat looking over the water but if you don't the food is still fantastic. Afterwards you can walk down the wharf stairs and hang out with the seals. There are several great taquerias in Santa Cruz (assuming they're still open). The best was Taqueria Vallarta on Soquel. There was another really great one across the street from the beach right by the boardwalk too. Also, there is a greek restaurant that has a great fish and chips basket. Top all this off with a trip to Marianne's ice cream. So good...the brownie and the caramel malt ball are my favorite flavors. There are lots of good asian restaurants there too but I don't recall names. I've had excellent Thai, Chinese and Japanese there...mostly downtown I think.

There are a lot of good restaurants downtown and it's a happening place on weekend nights with some street performers and whatnot.

Taco Loco in Laguna Beach. It's easy to miss, so here's its location. You can use Street View to see what it looks like.

http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&ie...aT3kzZgQY4HUAQ

Use Street View. You might have to move it a little to "644 S Coast Hwy‎." Pan around; you'll see a building with a "Z" near the top. To the right of its garage entrance is a small restaurant with a white railing and tables in front. That's it.

Hey LowBSix,

I'll be in L.A. from the 6th-18th, staying near Roscoemare and Mulholland.

Are you at the West L.A. or Uni City store?

Any good open blues jams?

I just left a trip like this (my friends are still goin). Check out june 18-29th on the blog, esp. the 27th, the date of our Double-double eat-off. Spoiler: I won at 5.

Full disclosure, the name of the blog is phallicroadtrip, but only because that's what the route looks like on googlemaps, the site itself is totally SFW. Just a warning. mods, notify me and i'll take it down if this is no bueno.

I'll be in LA visiting a good friend, former drummer and all around nice guy - July 11-14. Seems it's "TB'ers go to CA" month.

Anyone else?

There's one in LA. It's closer. It's off La Cienega. Bob_QSC's joint in Laguna is good. I would also recommend that. However if you're in the mood for Sushi, literally like a block away from there is San Shi Go sushi. San Shi Go means 345. That's the address. 345 PCH, it's upstairs. Pretty good stuff. For a great burrito, if your continue driving up the coast through Newport hang a right on Brookhurst street to Adams. Make a right on Adams and hit Los Primos. The have one of the best burritos around. I had one tonight thank you.

Ahhh.... SUSHI! That's on my list for sure now.

My friend and I usually to make a point of going to the Kings Head Inn in Santa Monica for their fish 'n chips each time I get out that way. The sushi tip is dead on and who doesn't want a great burrito? - Damn, I think the menu for my trip has been planned!

I wonder if any of this is making the OP's list?
