Well, I am going to try. I am going to try to stay away from products made in China this year. I know it's going to be tough! |

I think that I am also going to try and buy a lot of stuff used this year. Like used clothes and whatnot. Keep my eco footprint lower.

I actually got caught in a total crapstorm a few years ago when a store I worked in tried to boycott Israeli goods, and people said "why aren't you also boycotting Chinese goods?" I made the mistake of telling a reporter what I had been told by our Housewares dept. (the ones who actually had goods from China), that we "had to" carry Chinese goods due to consumer demand, and that reporter smeared my name all over the net, and her article was quoted with my full name in a hundred blogs painting me as a complete moron. Well, in hindsight I was a complete moron for involving myself in that whole debacle. |

I hope Chinese workers don't need to earn money to feed their families.

No kidding.
A hypothetical 20% unemployment rate in China means that there are more people out of work than the entire population of the United States. 300 million people with no jobs (and in a country with such a potent military) is not a pleasant thought.

Basically I like to buy products from countries that I know will have a certain quality to it. For instance, I know that Japanese people put a lot of attention into details at whatever they do. This makes me attracted to their products. I like US products because I like the idea of companies manufacturing and producing things here as opposed to exporting their labor to save costs. Food is a scary one for me. We only buy Japanese and US products. Simply because of the controls that are in place. For instance. It's very hard to find japanese style seaweed that is not made in china. |

I would rather spend a bunch of money on something that is built well than cheap out and buy something 5 times because it keeps breaking. I like buying stuff that is made in Canada, mainly because it is helping out the economy of my country, but I have no trouble buying stuff made in the US. Made in Mexico? I am a little leery of that, they have had a history of sweat shops and child labour. I would rather not support that. On the food side of things, I like to buy stuff that is grown around here. Heck, if I could I would kill all my own meat. I actually like to buy a 1/4 or a 1/2 of a cow at a time. Always from a farmer that I know. I like to do the same with pork as well.

But I also do not plan on buying another computer anytime soon. As for phones, my next phone will be a blackberry, which are made in the next town over from me.

It's not like he's not going to buy any products... for every non-ChiCom product he doesn't buy, ANOTHER family in a different country will have a job.
Personally, it doesn't put a smile on my face to have to choose between China, China and China when I'm looking for something.
