So I saw this film over the weekend and I really enjoyed the books, so was determined to see the film.
I was surprised there was no mention of it on here - even when I did search!
The thing is I'm still not sure what I think of the film?
What there was - was very good, some spectacular scenes, wonderful design, good casting of main characters - quite "authentic" and true to the book as far as it went..?
But it seemed to race through the story at breakneck speed and even left the last 3 chapters out! The story worked - but afterwards I am left feeling that a lot was left out - but as I have the books in mind, I can't quite say what...?
Maybe we'll have to wait for the extended DVD to see the whole story...?

I am interested in the series tho, and definitely would like to read the trilogy.

Then I heard about the His Dark Materials trilogy and read about it on Wikipedia. While it sounds very interesting I think I'll just read the books and skip the movie, at least for now. The cinema's expensive these days and my December movie budget is going to Sweeney Todd and more importantly There Will Be Blood. |

I would really like to see the other parts as they are darker and more philsophical and would bring some deep issues to a younger audience!
Maybe it was always going to be too difficult to make into a film!!??

| | | | I think the fact that they changed the title put me off - that and the fact that the book was a big part of my childhood (published when I was seven) and will never look as good as it did in my imagination at the time make me apprehensive about going to see it.
Edit: and it's hardly a Christmas story is it! As a confirmed atheist myself it doesn't bother me, but the overall anti-religious tone of the books will probably put a lot of parents off of taking their kids to see it at Christmas of all times.

The fact that some religious nuts are making it their latest reason to rend their garments and tear their hair out makes me all the more eager to contribute to its box office. |

So - you would have 3 films with 3 "mystical" objects as title - Compass,Subtle Knife and Amber Spyglass - actually makes more sense or shows more consistency!

But I haven't seen any reviews mention that here - they just see it as a Fantasy story...? This year's LOTRs..?

Every other big budget movie release has loads of people talking about it in threads...?

I am hoping to see in while back home around Christmas. |

People need to lighten up and just consider it a movie. I don't think it's anti-anything, although I've heard some discussion that the author was a dedicated atheist...which evidently has led people to decide that the movie must be evilwickedmean&nasty.
Just because a film deals with the kinds of plot issues found in Harry Potter or LOTR doesn't mean it's attacking anything. That's simply part of the movie's version of reality.
I want to see it. Looks like a good flick! |

All I could think of was that Star-something movie that came out a while ago that bombed and looked similar. I will check out the His Dark Materials information, though.
Also, Sweeney Todd looks like it will be a good flick. |

You say you've read the books - the kids go to heaven to try and kill God! Pullman is one of the great atheist writers of our time in my opinion. He's described his work as "trying to undermine the basis of Christian belief"
@Superduck - I think Sweeney Todd will be great - can't wait for that |

He IS a dedicated atheist, and the culmination of the books involves the girl killing God because it was "for the greater good of humanity." The books ARE blatently anti-Christian, even I picked up on that when I read them when I was 11.
With that being said, I'm not going to be seeing the movie. I am a Christian, and I have no desire to donate my money to the makers of a movie that is against everything that I believe. |

I did see Sweeney Todd this past weekend. That was macabre and disturbing! |

LOTR is a very well done allegory of Christianity. Although JRR Tolkien denied that he wrote it as that, but he was a very devout Roman Catholic and that came through in the books.
