Its pretty boring until 27:30 when the cop who has interviewed suspects for 28 yrs starts talking

Pretty cool video and probably true for a lot of situations. The only exception I would make is that in some cases, a cop might be suspicious if you keep pleading the fifth. Say I get pulled over for speeding. I may not admit that I was speeding, and that's fair enough. But then if the cop starts asking me basic questions like where I was going, it seems a bit unnecessary not to tell him the truth. Right or wrong, I think that might make him a bit suspicious.

If I'm being questioned as a potential suspect for a murder, then I might be more cautious. It might be in my self interest not to tell the police anything, though if I saw something then it's a tricky situation.

Yes.... cops have agendas.. say as little as possible without being rude or threatening to him.. sure they are doing their jobs, but that does not mean you have to say anymore than absolutely necessary.. get his Supv there ASAP.

On January 1, 2006, I made an illegal U-turn and crossed a double double yellow line in full view of a cop. When he pulled me over, I acted like I knew I was getting a ticket (which I believed at the time), and he let me off for no discernable reason.

Stay out of Palm Bay, FL. I'd get beaten and have evidence planted on me (happend twice and I was very respectfull to them). Seriously, I hate the cops where I live, they are sooo backwards.

I've only seen the first half with the professor. Very interesting so far.

I never, ever tell a cop anything that I do not have to. Ever. Yes, there are good cops, but in my experience, there are too many total jerks in law enforcement to ever really trust them.

I am polite, but never say anything unless asked a direct question, which is answered with the fewest possible words and with no more explanation than totally necessary.

It has always served me well.

I know there are good and bad in every walk of life. Many of the police officers that I know personally are the stereotypical people with inferiority complexes, so that makes me rather leary of dealing with them. It's especially ironic that many of the local officers here will pass me on the road if I'm doing the speed limit as if I were standing still.

I never got the whole "Where are you headed," question when you get pulled over for a routine traffic stop. I doubt I'm going to slip up and accidently tell them that I'm on my way to pick up a kilo of cocaine.

Cops are manipulative and put as many words in your mouth as they can. They love to search without permission and do anything they can possibly get away with to invade your life, personal property, and rights. That is their job and they are damn good at it.

I know 90% of the cops in my town on a first name bases, so I am cool with them. The other ones I usually just answer their questions, honesty is the best policy, just don't say more than you have to.

sorry you cannot start a police thread on a musicians forum without a Sting derailment.

I work closely with a lot cops. That's a scary thought in itself, but I instinctively avoid talking about personal details and always keep the conversation situational except when my buddies and I hang out. I'm instinctively a storyteller but so are cops. Most of the time I let them tell the stories. Especially my buddy who's an undercover narc. Actually he needs to let some of the stories out. I sent him the link to this and he agrees with everything. Don't talk no matter how much you might piss the cop off.

Do you think they're asking where you're going so that they can get on the radio and alert another patrol car to look for you, say, speeding (again) on the way to your destination?

Because that's what's probably going on. They don't need to know where you're going for any other reason. In fact, it's really none of their business, because it's highly unlikely that you're driving someplace that's against the law to drive to. Such places really don't exist, and police officers are employed to enforce laws and investigate alleged crimes (such investigations really ought not be happening until a crime is alleged). I'd wager that there's a certain amount of presupposition going on when they ask- namely that you habitually drive enough over the speed limit that you'll earn yourself a ticket every time they see you. I guess what I'm really trying to say is that asking you where you're going really has no bearing on the matter at hand; the crime of speeding really warrants no investigation beyond what their radar or laser device tells them.

You could, I suppose, chalk it up to "making the roads safer." But if you really wanted to do that then you'd have to have cops to watch the cops who don't stop at stop signs (while not in pursuit or going to a crime scene), or turn without using their signals (while not in pursuit or going to a crime scene), or follow too closely or pass you in a no passing zone (you know the deal)...

Interesting, but this all seemed like it was more... big time criminal case stuff.

I need to know how to get a cop to stop hasslin' me so he doesn't find the pot in the car.

Hmmm. I've never experienced any of that.

This has been true in my experience. Happened to me the other night.

In my experience, if a cop is "interviewing" someone, that person is either admitting or lying and it will eventually come back on them. I always advise to not speak with cops.
