Got the "Done Been Laid Off" Blues - Need Good Bass Line...

Well, it happened today. The company has a real classy way to handle it. They wait until about 3:00 PM, call you up to an HR flunky's office, she hands you the packet, has you sign the release, then they take your company credit card, security badge, etc.

THEN they escort you back down to your office - you're escorted from that point until you get out the door - and give you boxes to pack all your **** with. They watch while you do that.

While you're packing up, you hear "bee-deep!" from your computer, it logs off and you are locked out of the system, no time even to retrieve any personal data if there was any.

Then, "sayonara, kemosabe."

Like I said, really classy.

They gave me a few weeks' severance, and prorated all my vacation time for the year, and paid that to me, too. So that's okay, I guess.

Now, gotta hit the pavement and look for another job.

I've been working hard on my harmonica lately - and now I'll have time to really study.

Meantime, here's a little thing I've been working on, the title of which appears at the top of this thread:

duh-DUH-duh-duh-duh...
"Called me in to the HR office"
duh-DUH-duh-duh-duh...
"Give me the paper to sign"
duh-DUH-duh-duh-duh...
"Swore they'd send me my last paycheck"
duh-DUH-duh-duh-duh...
"Direct Deposit was fine -
"Cuz they don' need me no mo'
"Got no work comin' in the do'
"I'm laid off, laid off till they need me agin'...."

(With apologies to the gentlemen of color whose names all started
with "Blind," "Muddy," "Catfish," or "Big Bill.")

I think we are up to 2 or 3 of these threads a week now. This is getting ridiculous. I hear how bad the job market south of the border, but... wow... just wow. Best of luck finding a new gig, man.

I'm there too. I'm pretty lucky that I have a few crafts under my belt. I'll be fine, but it's a stressfull time none the less. The baby is due in about 5 weeks. OY!

I'm a structural engineer, been doin' it for about 27 years now. Even been self-employed for a time - that was fun, except for the "getting the client to pay" part.

Anyway, I'm sure it'll all work out.

Talk about stress-ville!

Takes a LOT of $100 per night gigs to feed a kid!

While our economy isn't hot right now (my company has done serious cutting back), it's not nearly as bad as the States. Of course, this is just anecdotal, I dont have any numbers.

Edit: I mean to say, I just don't hear the layoff stories from canadians that I do from americans. And apparently the job hunt in the states right now is viscious.

I'll be fine. I am a cheap bastard who saves every penny he can, and my wife is a Pediatrician. We're a lot better off than some. I'm using the time to get the baby room (my old jam room ) ready for the kid. And I'm learning Spanish! That should help me in the electrical cunstruction industry (sadly enough). All in all, these are exciting times for the Two Fingers family!!!!!!! The baby (a girl) kicks like crazy when she hears her daddy's voice! I'm a proud papa and she isn't even born yet!

As for you....GOOD LUCK and GOD SPEED!

Sorry to hear that man. As a structural engineer, you shouldn't have too much trouble finding work. The US gov is pumping a bunch of money into infrastructure, all that needs to be engineered.
