It goes:
1st - Basically an A
2:1 (upper second) - Basically a B
2:2 (lower second) - Basically a C
3rd - Basically a D
You need a 2:1 or a 1st (generally) to be competative in the job market, and you also generally need a 2:1 or a 1st if you plan to do post graduate study. Only one person in our degree classification got a 1st this year!

If it is the life sciences, the staff are (mainly) amazingly good folk. It is a very well rated university, while it doesnt have the "old school" name of edinburgh or st andrews, it surpases them both in many fields. It also has a huge amount of local biotech etc industries, aswell as the biggest & best cancer research facility in the UK (IIRC).
I would go for it
I'm going to Herriot Watt for my Masters, not a great choice of university, but it is one of the few places doing the kind of course im interested in. Then im planning on going back to Dundee to do my PhD, so if your around, ill buy you a beer !

It's a nice school, not as highly rated one as I would like, but it is a bit of a niche subject. I don't know for certain, but I was told, unofficially, that I would be given a place and scholarship if I attained either a 1 or a 2:1

You're basically competeting with other students for a finite number of grade slots? For example, when there's a test, only two students will be assigned an A, only three will get a B, eight will be given Cs, and so forth.
Med students and doctors, am I talking out my bunghole here? LOL

Here in the States, GPA is more important when applying to graduate or professional school...and it can be argued that there are still other factors more important than actual grades when it comes to getting accepted. Actual GPA is less so important when looking for employment. A "Summa Cum Laude" designation on a resume or cirriculum vitae may give you a little edge over other applicants, but in general, people are more interested in your work experience, skills, and your overall marketability. Personal networking is probably the biggest overall employment tool you can have in your disposal. Nepotism helps too if you live where I do.
I wish there were more emphasis placed on academic achievement here other than just having the piece of of paper.
