Graphics Cards

I want to upgrade my graphics card, and was hoping for some advice.

I currently have a Geforce 7300 (can't remember whether it is SE, LE, GS or GT - have a feeling that it might be GS). I'm running a 1.8 dual core with 2g of RAM.

I was looking at the 8 series, and will be limited to an 8500 or possibly 8600, as my budget is <£60. Then I had a look at the 7 series, and I was wondering if I would be better off getting a 7900 or 7950 than an 8500.

I don't NEED an 8 series as such, as I am not bothered about Direct X 10 - I don't play newer games, I tend to go for older games (mostly out 2006 at the latest, and some a lot earlier).

Just wondering what people who know more about this stuff than me would do in my situation.

Cheers

IMO you wont get a huge boost from going from low 7 series to low 8 series.

Maybe best going to the higher 7's as you suggested.

Ive only really looked at the higher end stuff, so im no use really (Plan on getting a 8800 GT when i build my next pc )

Yeah always go for the most powerful from the last generation rather than entry models in the new one.
Currently, Radeon X1950, HD2900 and GeForce 7900 are the best bang for the bucks.

That suggestion needs to be dipped in gold. Oh look! I've done it.

Which would be the best out of those? I haven't looked into anything other than Geforce. Maybe I should.

Depends how much you want to spend.
The HD2900 XT with 256 mb is great for 150 or so but it takes a lot of room.

I always like to see what Tom has to say although you'll have to convert to pounds.

I'm running an overclocked 8800GT. Loving it so far. For what you're looking at it think the ATI Radeon HD3850 would possibly be a very good option.
