The Great Ontario Snow Storm!

Sign in to disble this ad
One of the few nice things about Detroit, is that being one the lee (west) side of the Great Lakes we don't get much Lake effect snow. Well, we had a typical Alberta Clipper Great Lakes snow storm roll through the state Sunday. We got about five inches, with High winds and a serious temp. drop. The high yesterday was nine degrees above zero.

Anyway, just north and west of us on the other side of Lake Huron, they have been getting pounded with some serious lake effect. Well, when the storm rolled through they got hit with a thirty-six hour blizzard that dumped about three feet of snow with continuous 30-40 mph winds. The main hwy from Sarnia to Toronto 402 (one of the busiest highways in the entire country)was impassable with about three hundred people trapped in vehicles. It is so bad that the Bluewater bridge one of the busiest border crossings will be closed for about four days.
They are calling it a huge national disaster in Canada. This is only about 65 miles from Detroit. The snow is literally over the tops of the 18 wheelers (drifts) and they have no idea when the highway which goes for miles thru a flat open area will be cleared (it will probably be at least a week).

I had a double snow day this week. Only 3 days of school before winter break.

45 minutes in any direction has well over a meter of snow, we barely have any here in Kitchener. It is quite the storm.

Wow, Detroit has lots of busiest in the USA stuff there.

Hopefully no one from Seattle is out there trying to drive.

i just got back yesterday from a bit of that-
gigs in st. catherine, london, petersboro, quebec city, montreal and toronto.
we missed the worst, were just ahead of it but when in london there was 4 feet of snow the night we played.
folks still came to the shows anyway, the general attitude was basically this:
"sure it's bad, but we do happen to be in canada in december.
we should do a shot, eh?"

30-40cm and 70km/h winds?

We'd call that getting off easy down here.

I heard it was a 6-10 hour wait for trucks to get over the Ambassador bridge today and the backups were messing up traffic all over down town. With the Bluewater bridge closed all that traffic is being funneled thru downtown Detroit. And they don't let the big Trucks in the Tunnel. Yeah we've got a long busy border with Canada and no budget for road salt or the crews to get it out, my 4 X 4 has been handy this year. Our roads were an ice rink yesterday. As far as people from Seattle trying to drive out here, I've seen the vids of Seattle snow driving, their all sitting in ditches along I-75.

It seems like everyone around us has been getting hammered with snow. When the guys in Traverse City and Petosky tell you it's big for this time of year, it's serious. They've already gotten three "incidental" lake effect blows of more than twenty inches.

Yeah, but Newfees don't drive anywhere in winter they just sit in the pubs and drink.

Now that I think of it, thats pretty much what they do in summer too.

London is still getting it. A friend of mine just posted a picture of their backyard and the snow is almost to the top of the fence.

If it makes you feel better we got about an inch or so of snow in London the other week. I almost slipped over once.

I'm dreaming of a green Christmas.

We are running out of places to put snow on our street. We only got our street completely plowed on Monday which result in a 2 foot ice dam as a result of the thaw and freeze over Sunday night/Monday morning. Yesterday the sidewalk snowblower machine arrived a week after the big storm.

What? That is unacceptable. When I need to get to Windsor to get my Maynards wine gums, no one better make me wait that long.

It's not snowing today, but U of Western Ontario is closed again. And I thought I was getting away from all the snow moving here from Hearst, ON.

That storm caused all sorts of problems on the US side. Port Huron and the I-94 corridor up there were a mess for a while until they started redirecting the trucks to the Ambassador. And then they still had to hold the hazardous material trucks until late yesterday.

Then with all the redirected traffic, they get the 5 hour backups around the Ambassador and the traffic snarls around Detroit caused by that.

Wow, that sucks. When I went to UWO I had one exam canceled due to a snow storm, I can imagine how much of a logistical nightmare all this snow must be for exams.
