This is a Japanese flick. It's a fantasy film that dabbles heavily into Japanese folklore. This movie is really stoney and blew me away. Very much like Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away, except live action, not animation. It got me thinking about the folklore and mythical creatures from other countries and cultures. What other movies are out there like this? Has anyone else seen this movie? The Japanese school girl from Kill Bill is in it. What other movies are there like this, from other countries? |

I'm guessing that there really aren't that many different nation's movies being marketed in north america that's going to merit you finding films dealing with cultural folklore. I figure east asia is your best bet, india if youre lucky, and you could count in europe, but so much of north amican folklore IS european, unless you get into something more nordic, you won't find much.
My two cents.

It's (to my knowledge) not folklore based, but you'd do MUCH better watching Casshern...

CHeers ROdy | Cool I'll check that out. Actually, that cute furry creature is yokai. Each one of those weird creatures has a story in Japanese folklore. My wife knew a lot of them from her childhood. |

Another good Japanese movie (in a completely different genre) is Departures.

"Samurai Reincarnation" is sorta in that vein, with real figures out of Japanese history being reincarnated as demons to help one of their number get revenge on the people who did him wrong...The above is the name of the translated film, it's out on DVD; don't remember at moment what original Japanese title was. Lots of anime with all sorts of Japanese mythilogical beasties, of course. (I've been collecting Japanese anime and various live action shows and movies since the 1970's, back before Japanime was commerically available here stateside...)
