Greg Howe's tone?

For the Guitarists here, anyone know how Greg Howe gets that "clean" distortion sound? I think he uses a BB preamp but the thing is $189 which is, imo, too expenisve for a hobbyist like myself. anyone have any suggestions for a good way to get that tone for around $100? The Boss DS-1 seems pretty nice for it's price but there may be better out there.
