Animal rights folks should worry about their own nuts.

At the very least they'll have to change his name. If the bear population at large should ever find out about this diabolical plot, there's gonna be a revolution! It'll be anarchy! Angry bears guarding their loins rampaging through the streets!!

Really, this is pretty stupid. SO they want to castrate him as opposed to what? Moving him to another enclosure for a while? Oh brother.
Have these idiots who cooked this up come to North Jersey. They could de-nut all the bears they want.

I hear next on the agenda is to propose a ban on Bear Feet styled slippers, as they promote removing the feet from actual bears.

| | | | I am going to need a drink.
I work w/ Animals on a daily basis in a variety of professional and recreational contexts. I cannot stand PETA or the HSUS for a variety of reasons, but this one takes the cake.
Problems:
1) Ethical treatment for ANY living creature most certainly does NOT involve genital mutilation. (I don't advocate spaying/neutering dogs automatically as we do as a society either). You do not love your pet if you have hacked off their reproductive parts. Sorry, not buying it. You are making your life easier, not theirs.
2) It is called Inbreeding Depression, not 'incest depression. This typically occurs anytime the breeding pool drops below a threshold (give or take 50 individuals depending on the species).
3) There are thousands of ways to prevent an animal from breeding another given animal that do not involve mutilating the animal.
PETA gives animal lovers everywhere a bad name. Maybe they will run into legal troubles and get caught in lies the way the HSUS has. I can only dream.
Sorry for the rant.... |

| | | | Sorry, more:
"Knut fans need to know that only Knut's castration would allow a long life together with Giovanna," Albrecht said in a statement.
This is an example of anthropomorphism. Superimposing human traits on a non-human species. It is absolutely inexcusable that a professional animal worker make a statement like this.
Humans may place a premium on 'living a long life together' with another conspecific. Polar bears may, or they may not. We don't know. The reason they are initially attracted to other (opposite gendered) animals though, is to do the horizontal hop. Which they are essentially prohibiting.
In effect, they are removing one crucial part of the bear's existence to perpetuate a human desire that the bears may or may not be interested in.
Disgusting. |

They are an impressive animal. I think this idea is a great idea. One PETA member can hold the Bear down, another PETA member can administer the anesthesia and perform the castration. I would pay to watch this, armed, from a safe distance, with a pair of binoculars. I suspect it would take multiple Bear Castration attempts to accomplish their goal. It would also have the side effect of thinning the ranks of PETA's membership severely, but you have to sacrifice if you truly believe in something.
