Gruden the new Madden?

Sign in to disble this ad
After the success that Jon Gruden has achieved in the broadcast booth in such a short period of time (Monday night football is getting great ratings & JG has been signed to a lucrative extension), is Gruden the new John Madden?

There are similarities: both coaches had short head coaching careers; both coaches won Super bowl trophies; both coached for Al Davis; both add an 'everyman' enthusiasm to their color commentary that seems to go over well w/ football watching public- and both seem to thrive in the TV arena w/ seemingly no desire to return to coaching...

All thats left is for Gruden to get his face plastered across the packaging for a video game

Thoughts?

I'm reserving judgement until I see his RV and weird Thanksgiving game foods. Turducken anyone?

He won't need a Thanksgiving MVP award until we move Thanksgiving to Monday.........

He also needs to be better at what he does. Totally unimpressive so far.

I didn't think I'd ever miss John Madden's broadcasting when he retired - but now that Chris Collinsworth is his replacement.....I kind of miss John Madden. Collinsworth is a douchenozzle.

Can't stand Chris Collinsworth. JG is okay, but nothing special.

I would LOVE for Tom Jackson or Cris Carter to do color for a couple games. The current pregame show lineup (minus Boomer) is the best they've had in years.

if anyone's going to take madden's place he has to be down with the screen pen doodles.

Well, I think thats at least a little unfair: he is obviously doing his homework on players, has made good commentary with regards to offensive & defensive schemes and tendencies... I think his passion for the game & exuberant talk is what directly correlates to the Madden comparison. To say that Madden was much more elaborate than your 'example' is a little extreme imo

True. I don't think I've seen anyone cirle the sweat stains on a lineman's ass all year.

I like Carter, but Keyshawn not so much... the commercial they did for his 'Key' matchups (matching pocket hanky & socks) didnt seem to far fetched for him imo

I found Madden to be rather shrill; his voice got tiring to me. I'm much more of a Keith Jackson (a WSU Cougar) style guy. Collinsworth has a nice touch, and I like his broadcasts. Gruden brings a nice level of enthusiasm to the broadcast.

God help us all, they MIGHT have kept Dennis Miller or that idiot Tony Kornheiser. They kept me from watching about half the games - they were the WORST things to ever happen to the broadcast.

What this nation really needs is Dandy Don back in the booth singing 'Turn Out The Lights"!

I liked Madden alright- but I agree with the rest: Ive always appreciated Jackson, and another fave would be Enberg. Collinsworth doesnt bother me the way he does some... but man theres no missing Miller or Kornheiser. They are alright at other things but what were MNF brass thinking there

^I'm beginning to think I'm the only guy who liked Kornheiser as a broadcaster. Oh well, I still watch PTI.

I think you misspelled one of those words. I fixed it to reflect your true intent, perv.

Maybe that was a slight reduction of the man's work!!

My announcer "kryptonite" is the overuse of the cliche' and saying the word "football" over and over again.

Yeah, I noticed that Gruden may have an extra cup of coffee before each game...he seems to be on fast forward. But so far, I like it.

I find Kornheiser OK on radio, but I thought he was horrendously out of place on TV, and overly negative in his comments.

Yes, he does like to tell people how each subject "is a football player!"
