Okay, what's wrong with this picture?
I just found out that Keith Richards likes to play the video game Guitar Hero™. ***? Isn't that like Donald Trump coming home after a long hard day at the office and firing up the Real Estate Mogul™ game on his PlayStation? |

| | | | See, I used to hate Guitar Hero. Then I realized I don't really hate the game compared to some of the people. Your gaming freak and every other category of gamer is acceptable. The only thing that I cannot stand for, though, would be those who brag of it as if it were a real guitar they were playing. Brag that you are good, not that you can play the guitar. I say, have fun, just don't sell it off as the real thing. |

Sure you could learn to play an instrument instead of playing Guitar Hero, but you could also do charity work instead of practicing bass as well. People do things that are fun in their free time, end of story. |

Right, but my point (to address wdinc01, who couldn't figure this out) is that Keith Richards doesn't need to play a video game in order to get all the fun ostensibly offered by Guitar Hero™, he is a guitar hero. If his idea of fun is standing onstage in front of a crowd of adoring fans smacking the poo out of a Telecaster, he can just go to work.
It's called "irony".
The normal escape/fantasy that video games offer the average joe doesn't jibe w/ Keith's lifestyle, because this particular game is essentially modelled after Keith's lifestyle. |

You assume most Guitar Hero players see it as something more than a video game. There's been specialized controllers for games for over a decade now, what makes the GH controller any different? Nothing. It is a video game put into a video game system and played with a video game controller.
And to be frank, it ain't NOTHING like playing real guitar, so I bet even Keith sucked balls first time he tried it.

Sure, it's a fun game, but playing a real instrument does much more for me. But, unlike some people, I don't see anything wrong with people playing it. I don't know what the Hell you guys have against it, its just a ****ing game. Let people do what they want and mind your own business. |

The reason people are drawn to certain games and not others is exactly because of the type of controller and/or the specific fantasy scenario that brandishing that controller puts the gamer in. Compare # of units sold for Motal Kombat versus Dance Dance Revolution if there's any doubt. People would rather shoot up a shopping mall than bust a move...even though both are just "a video game put into a video game system and played with a video game controller"

I don't see anyone complaining about that.

You were speaking of Keith playing GH. I think it's very safe to say Keith does NOT play this game to associate it with the real guitar. It's just a game.

The Guitar Hero "world tours" and junk like that. Why not search for real musicians instead? And I've said this before, but it really upsets me. There used to be open jam sessions on Thursday nights at my school, that brought some really cool people together for some really impressive improv. Now instead there is an X-Box 360 and Rock Band.

The normal escape/fantasy that video games offer the average joe doesn't jibe w/ Keith's lifestyle, because this particular game is essentially modelled after Keith's lifestyle. | I know what you were saying in your first post. I was just giving a "So?" response. Just because Keith Richards plays guitar and goes on tour doesn't mean he shouldn't be able to sit down on the couch with his family and play a simulation of what his lifestyle essentially is. He plays guitar, so maybe guitar-related games interest him. And plus, I don't think he'd want to sit down and learn every song on there just so he can play it on guitar.
Think about people who race cars. I'm sure they play car racing games because they find it fun, and it doesn't take as much work as real life.

The difference is that being online talking about bass guitars on TalkBass.com in no way resembles what I do for a living, or what I do for the other 12+ hours of the day.
Except for those times when I inadvertantly offer someone good advice here. But I try to keep that to a minimum; otherwise it RESEMBLES WORK! | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
