Are you getting the H1N1 shot?
Personally I'm against it, strongly. I don't think it was tested enough, and especially when the the makers who created it are saying they are not taking it or recommending....that says something to me.

While it is not exactly common, it is nowhere near 1 in 1 million. Second, there is no reason to believe that her dystonia was caused by the flu shot. There's no known mechanism that anyone knows of that could cause this to happen, nor are there any other reported cases of dystonia attributed to flu shots. Just because a few of her doctors believe the flu shot may have been involved, doesn't mean that the other 99% of neurologists don't think the idea is ridiculous.
Her case is really suspicious. There are exceptions to every rule, but dystonia does not normally occur with such a sudden onset at her age. Her movement and speech problems look contrived.
The fact is that there are a lot of people with pseudoneurological disorders. In other words, people who have symptoms of a neurolgic disorder (numbness, fainting, weakness, changes in mental status, memory loss, tingling, pain, the list goes on) but with no medical problem that can be detected. Some are faking illness for gain. Others have factitious disorder, where there is nothing to gain by being ill other than attention, yet they are still faking. Still others have somatoform disorder, where they are genuinely experiencing the symptoms they describe (not faking), but the cause is psychological, not physical.
Check out this guy with real, generalized dystonia: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VHGzUxnuvwQ
Notice how despite having had generalized dystonia for most of his life, this man has very little control over his movements. When you watch him trying to get up around 2:39, notice that he nearly hits his head on the table. Someone with a real movement disorder can and often will injure himself performing day to day activities. Notice the abnormal posturing in the man's legs, and particularly feet. He isn't able to 'turn off' his dystonia by running, or walking backwards.
People whose movement disorders are psychological will usually not injure themselves; while she falters, she appears to be steady and in control, showing no signs of unsteadiness or instability, let alone falling. The cheerleader's posturing is normal - compare how she positions her feet with the man above.
Due to vaccine shortages, I am suspending my usual practice of trying to convince people to get flu shots. If you don't want it, then that just means more vaccines for the people who want/need it. If you're worried about getting the flu, you won't get it from the shot, but you might get it from the nasal spray. If you're worried about Guillain-Barre syndrome, it's a rare possibility, but you're more likely to be one of the unlucky few who die from the flu. There were about 25 people who died from it in 76, and since then there haven't been many cases - but it's a possibility (one in a few million) if the flu vaccine batch is contaminated. And as for dystonia... well, if there is a link, it hasn't yet been demonstrated in anyone else. Autism and flu shots? No. Allergy? Possible.

| | | | No, several people around here got sick because of the vaccine.
I'm not too worried about the swine flu, and besides, I have never even had the flu! |

Doc tells me not to worry about it either way, H1N1 is actually LESS dangerous than the other various common influenza viruses that float around. It's just another media induced frenzy like Bird Flu. Tells me the last actual scare that was worth looking out for was SARS, and even then, not at my age.
Either way, it doesn't feel good to have it.

The number of seasonal influenza-associated (i.e., seasonal flu-related) deaths varies from year to year because flu seasons often fluctuate in length and severity. CDC estimated that about 36,000 people died of seasonal flu-related causes each year, on average, during the 1990s in the United States.
I think there is a lot more media publicity surrounding the H1N1 virus, but the regular seasonal flu has been far more deadly.

Had to miss out on our yearly Halloween gig because of it Such is the problem with a fever of 39.5 degrees celsius. I even had an amazing costume, and sadly will not get a chance to wear it.

and how many of those who died , already had pre-existing conditions
which may have contributed to their deaths ?
if we can believe the media , asthma and other related bronchial diseases , are also reported in many of these cases .
i'm sure you're very aware that the flu kills , or contributes to the death , of thousands every year.
H1N1 is no more scary to me than any other seasonal flu .
no , my family and i will not receive the multiple H1N1 shots ...

I got the vaccine, as did my wife and two children. None of us got sick from the vaccine, other than a little soreness in and slightly elevated temperature for a few hours. Same as the seasonal flu vaccine.

....but they wouldn't have died if they had received the vaccine and not gotten the flu.
And it's one shot for anyone over 10.

Please provide credible links proving that the "makers" of the vaccine are recommending that you avoid it. In addition to making no medical sense, that silly comment would fly in the face of good business sense, too. Why would you tell people NOT to use your product?
