Had my information stolen

Logged in to my online banking today with Keybank and noticed 3 charges from Orlando, Florida today. Tried to call the help line but they asked for a "telephone authorization code", which I was never given, so I couldn't provide it. Wound up calling the local branch and they closed the account and are disputing the transactions.

I honestly thought this would never happen to me. Now I know to be more careful.

How do you think the perpetrators got access to your banking information?
And in what ways can you be more careful to ensure something like this does not happen again?

Just putting out some questions to hopefully help others avoid a similar fate...

Well, I order some things online, so I think that's probably how it happened.

I try to make sure any website where I make payments is secure, but I might not have been as careful as I should have been.

I guess I'm just going to have to look more carefully at the websites at which I spend money.

I would just use paypal, but I've had my paypal account hacked before, too. So I don't really have any more trust in them than I do in the sites I spend money at.

Maybe try Lifelock? $9/month.

You're lucky you caught it early.. Debit cards usually don't have those kind of security if not reported within 2 days.

Years ago, when I was on AOL, someone stole my credit card info and opened an account. I had much difficulty with AOL as they had the name and address of the person who stole MY credit card info, and refused to tell me any details saying that would be a privacy invasion of......THE CROOK.

I'm glad AOL is struggling so now. Maybe if they treated customers with more respect, they would not be bleeding so much.

Sometimes it just happens.

They alway have ways of getting your details, you just need to make sure yours are harder to get than someone elses.

I got stung by CC fraud earlier in the year. Thankfully it was sorted out ASAP by the bank.

Got a whole set of new bank cards, when buying on the net, I only ever use the credit card these days. Just that extra bit of security.

In this situation, Lifelock would offer fraud compensation, not protection. And that's something a lot of respectable banks will provide anyway.

Also, in addition to their CEO's identity being stolen a dozen times during that not-so-wise ad campaign, there's a plethora of problems with their practices and claims.

I'm going through the same thing. Saturday a crap ton of stuff showed up on my card. I've been tying off ends since Sunday night when I discovered it. It's a serious pain.

I, like you, do a lot of online shopping and such. I have PCtools entire suite of internet protection and it failed. For what it's worth I'm not a pron surfer. I use Amazon, paypal, newegg and xbox live. That's it.

The dumb jack-holes used the x-box live account to upgrade my existing account to a family 4 pack and associate their account with mine so they could use the live services (seriously??) and then proved to be more moronic when they purchased 6000 microsoft points and gave them to another account ( I mean REALLY ?!?! ) of course xbox e-mailed me the info on who I generously gave all this to. Should go pretty fast with the investigation.

I could go to the extreme and only shop online using pre-paid VISA cards. Would be more of a hastle, but reduce the chance of my bank account being affected down almost to 0.

Also, I work pretty hard at using strong passwords. Glad to see I don't use any of the passwords in that list.

I think you did the right thing. You won't be held responsible for transactions that were so clearly out of your usage patterns, that's for sure.
