Hanging with the locals in El Paso, Tx

Sign in to disble this ad
Lets just say, hypothetically, that this weekend I was planning on hopping on a bus and riding to El Paso, Tx.

When I go on vacation I usually prefer to get mixed up with the locals and hang like if Im from the area, rather than go do any sort of touristy type stuff.

Well, what do I do? Know of any good bars with excellent draft beer?

Go to Hueco Tanks if you're into rock climbing, hiking, or camping.

It was kind of a defensive move. Hold the Mexicans at bay and
all by tricking them into thinking it was in San Antonio.

Is that some sort of bar or club?

I'll only be in town for a 3 day weekend, looking more to hang out in El Paso proper.

The worst part is that I live and was born in Texas and have been to the Alamo like 1000 times. Slip of the mind I guess.

Happens to me all the time. I usually blame bourbon.

There's a cantina called Rose's you should visit...just be wary of any wild young cowboys coming in!

EDIT: For those who didn't get my reference: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GgI5DMVegIk

Well, they did film part of The Alamo (the first one-with John Wayne) at a re-creation of the original Alamo built way out in Bracketville. That's closer to El Paso, I guess. It's a pretty cool tourist stop on the way out west. Seems like I heard somewhere that John Wayne had it built with his own funds. Don't know if that's true.

But I digress. Sorry. I can't remember any cool hangs in El Paso proper. Try the area close to Ft. Bliss?

No idea what to do in El Paso aside from outdoorsy stuff. Go to the Texas Monthly website. They recommend good restaurants and whatnot.

One thing to see is the view towards Mexico from up high near the interstate on a clear night. Looks like one solid neverending city to the south. Kinda cool.

drink a bunch of the water and see if the abundance of lithium in their soil makes you feel funny.

So Juarez is just cross the border from El Paso. I was thinking about sitting up high near the interstate with some binoculars and witnessing some carnage from afar.

Just stay away from the wicked Felina!!

I prefer the Old 97's version (from King of the Hill), personally.

I was out that way a couple years and pondered this same idea. I was advised from some locals to not even go near the area, and some of them were Mexicans themselves. So I didn't.

I certainly have no plans to cross the border!
