So my university (York) is very likely going to go on strike. To be more specific, the T.A.'s, G.A.'s, and contract faculty are going to strike because they want more money, same old story.
Thing is, I'm freakin' ecstatic! If I can get these credits without having to do the entire workload (we are exempted from anything that would have been covered over the strike period), well, that's just awesome. I'm not so concerned about this degree so much as I am concerned about using it to get into teacher's college (or ESL, more likely ESL). It'll be my second B.A. - I've had a zillion classes at this university, so a little free credit doesn't seem so bad.
Is it wrong that I'm hoping for a strike??

-Mike | +1, if you think about, you're getting screwed because you're paying for an education you're not getting. Would you pay full price for an electrician to wire only half your house?

Is it wrong that I'm hoping for a strike?? | My 4th year we had a month long strike (Dalhousie 2002). The pro of it was that I could do more work on my research project. The downside was, as Vince indicated, we all got ripped off.
The whole thing was a farce in the end. What did the students get? An 8% as opposed to 14% tuition hike the following year. I missed key material which would have been helpful in grad school.
You only need the credits to get into teacher's college so it doesn't really hurt you. Less work can be nice, especially as a breather so I can see why you would possibly be excited.

And didn't they come to an agreement? |

We had more time to do homework plus relax a bit, but when the strike ended our teachers had to condense 2.5 weeks of lecture into 1 week. Any short term gain from it all was lost. |

I wouldn't mind a few days off but it won't bother me if we don't get it. Bottom line is we're either going to miss material in class, have classes pushed into our break, or both. Not really as great as it seems |

Is it wrong that I'm hoping for a strike?? | So you're going to get credit for classes you haven't actually passed, and use that credit to go and teach? The lessons you give to your students might be lacking that certain something. Like knowledge.
(Not really busting your chops for this - just wondering whether you'd thought about this aspect.)

I'm not going to grad school after this, I'm applying to teacher's college and the ESL program, and honestly I hope to get into ESL way more (teaching english over seas! yes!), so really, missing out on a few weeks or months worth of material isn't going to kill me, because for one thing, the chances of me ever needing to teach that specific material are pretty slim. And anyways, I've been here for... uhh... WAY too long. This my SEVENTH YEAR at York (a degree in philosophy and now finishing a degree in english) and dag nabbit I want some easy credits!
Bassybill, yeah, I see what you're saying, but I think I can survive the world of teaching even if I miss a few weeks of material. And really, who here has gone to post secondary and read EVERY assigned reading and attended EVERY class and has remembered it all?
STRIKE STRIKE STRIKE! I want an easy out!
