Hey thanks! You can tell I'm an old guy. I went to bed early last night and am up at 4:30

My birthday present to myself was purchasing tickets to see the Chick Corea 'Five Man Band' tour in a couple of weeks (they are coming to Ann Arbor, which is just down the road).

Chick
John McLaughlin
Christian McBride on EB
Brian Blade
Kenny Garrett

That should be good!

Happy Birthday Ken.

May your day be filled with endless back and forths with Brad over subjective matters!

Many Happy Returns, Ken!

That 5 man band line up sounds fantastic. I wonder if they're doing any UK gigs?

Thanks!

The EU tour (with Vinnie C. on drums) is over, but there is a 2 disc live CD of that part of the tour that is due for release on Wednesday.

I'm kind of done with the 'fusion' thing, but seeing these guys live (especially a couple of the 'founders of the genre') is always amazing. Chick has really been doing some cool stuff lately. I saw his 'flamenco tour' a while back with a bunch of guys from Paco De Lucia's band, and it was so burning that it hurt!

I saw RTF on their London gig last July. One of the best gigs I've ever been to.

I haven't seen McLaughlin live for a long time - first gig was back in 79 with Billy Cobham, Stu Goldberg and Jack Bruce. Then I saw him play an acoustic set a couple of years after that, with Christian Escoudé.

EDIT - I just found online a pretty reasonable recording of the McLaughlin/Cobham/Bruce/Goldberg line-up, playing a gig in Lund, Sweden, just a month before I caught them in London. The files are RAR archives and unzip to FLAC format (these play in Winamp, no problem).

I saw that band the first time around (speaking of being 'old') It really blew me away way back then. I'd never heard anything like that before! I heard the tour was great and that Stanley's playing was inspired!

There is a double live disc of that tour being released on Wednesday also on Chick's site.

There's nothing better than talking about good tunes on your birthday!!!

Yeah, Stan was superb - especially his double bass solo. He plays that upright almost like a flamenco guitarist.

That double live album will make a great birthday present for my sister, who came along to the gig with me. Thanks!

Happy Birthday, Ken! So I take it you'll be hitting the early-bird buffet at the Roast House before the show?

Cheers,
Kevin

Happy birthday, old bean! If you can make it to Weber's, in Ann Arbor, I'll buy you a drink. What we do is a far cry from Chick Correa, but we have fun.
