Happy holiday everybody. MLK day is a day I go to a memorial and basically sneak one last post Christmas break before the semester really kicks in. I hope everyone else has a good day too.

Quite a long name for a holiday. Enjoy it!

I think way too many people have forgotten this man's greatness. Think of it like this; there's only three Americans that have a national holiday named after them!

My kids school did a passable job at explaining why this day is important, but it's sort of tough for 5 yr. olds to grasp the whole thing.

Happy Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. day everyone.

It's really easy to forget that this was a VERY different country in the not-so-distant past. Atrocities that we now consider unthinkable (seperate water fountains, police dogs & water hoses, lynchings and terrorism) were commonplace.

Thank you Dr. King for taking a stand and changing history.

I am because you were.

For me, living in days where it's hard for people to listen to common sense, this guy got people to listen...still have no idea how he did it.

Happy MLK Day.

IMHO, "Letter From a Birmingham Jail" is one of the most moving moral essays ever.

Happy Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. I know this may surprise people who think that Republicans (which I am no longer) or Conservatives are racist by nature of their political affiliation, but Dr. King is one of my heroes. He spoke not to black people but to all people. He did not divide, he united. Oh, to be sure he greatly upset allot of bigots, but mostly he united people of all races behind the cause of equality and social justice.

a spoken word shared yesterday in our church... "Jesus said 'Love your neighbor as yourself, for this is the fulfillment of the law.' There's no qualifier that says if your neigbor looks like yourself." In honor of this day, go love your neighbor as yourself, even the ones that don't look like yourself.

I HAVE MET DR. MARTIN LUTHER THE KING!

(I had to do the Coming to America reference)

Today is a day that needs to reflected on for more than a man and a speech.

Thank you, sir, for your gifts to us all.

My wife is pulling up some articles to read with my son.
Then, as is our tradition for the past few years, we'll put on "Hotter than July" and all dance to the song is Dr. King's honor.

As Stevie said, "Happy Birthday TO ya!"

Oop s created a second thread accidentally, one of my biggest heroes. I wish America had another leader like him. It makes me sad that he is not with us today.

Dr. King is very well respected in my house.

Story:
I grew up in a military household. I grew up around children of all races, and considered this to be normal throughout my life. I was eight years old, when my father retired, and moved to suburban Northern New Jersey.

First day of school, I was in shock. In a grade with 93 students, only ONE was African-American. The other 92 were white. For the first time I experienced racism.

Racism, to this day, is something I do not tolerate.
/Story

Dr. King was a man among men. He had his head on straight, and worked to right the wrongs of society, with more interest in the goal than his own safety. For anyone to put his life on the line for a positive movement, I have much respect. For Dr. King, I have the utmost.
