My wife is running Windows I am running a mac. Is there something that will work with both and is easy to use and intuitive when you want to access what has been backed up?

Thanks for any advice?

Cobian Backup is a great Windows archiving program, and its free. Just google it and you'll find a link to it. Timemachine is drop dead simple on the Mac. You could both back up to the same drive.

Pretty easy to set up, works well backing up over a network.
