Hard drive problem...

Sign in to disble this ad
Well my roommate's computer says that a windows file is corrupt and it won't start, so we popped the hard drive out and put it in a USB enclosure and hooked it up to mine. It will start copying files over and then stop... i have to unplug the USB and plug it back in, its like it locks up at a certain point. Is his hard drive shot? Is there anything we can do?

Thanks

There's only about 247 different things that could be wrong. Trying to diagnose this on the TalkBass forum is just about certain to be pointless.

Yeah.... Thats a real hard one.

Does the drive make any unhealthy sounds, clicks etc ? Does windows give any 'corrupt info' type error messages?

Other things to look at could be to do with your machine. Are you running Vista? Vista doesn't seem to like mass file copying through USB. Especially if the source folders are huge. Try hooking a digital camera up with 200+ photos via USB to Vista running on an aging machine. Fun Times...

I am running vista... so it would be better to transfer on a XP computer?

+ infinity. I would have done this WAAAAAAAAAAAAY before ever thinking about taking the harddrive out. F12 at startup, boot from recovery disk, follow directions for repair.
